Nicer Skies

Nicer Skies replaces the plain night sky with procedurally generated nebulas and stars that twinkle in slightly different colours. It is a Fabric mod that runs on the player's side only.

Nicer Skies is a sky mod for Java that swaps the flat night backdrop for nebulas and twinkling stars. It ships for Fabric, and an older Quilt line has stopped. It runs on the player's side only, so it is for your own install and not for a dedicated host.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Quilt: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 1.20.2, builds stopped after September 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

  • Nebulas: a skybox generated at runtime with shader-like clouds of colour. It depends on the world seed or the host you join, so different worlds look different.
  • Stars: they twinkle and come in slightly different colours.

Installation and settings

Install Fabric first if you have not (how to install Fabric), then drop the mod file into your mods folder. The general steps are in the Java mod install guide. The newest release needs no other mods.

Settings need Mod Menu. Open the mod list, select Nicer Skies and press its settings button. Without Mod Menu the mod stays on its default settings.

Questions about Nicer Skies.

3 questions

Does Nicer Skies work with shaders?

Mostly no. The mod does not work with most shader packs. It does work with Complementary Reimagined, where it looks very good.

How do I change Nicer Skies settings?

Install Mod Menu alongside it. Open the mod list, select Nicer Skies and press the settings button beside it. Without Mod Menu there is no settings screen and the mod stays on its defaults.

Can I use Nicer Skies on Bedrock?

No. It is a Java mod built for Fabric, and Bedrock cannot load mods of this type. Players on Java can install it with Fabric, and it needs no other mods in its newest release.
