What Particle Rain works with.
| Platform | Java Edition |
|---|---|
| Loaders | Fabric, NeoForge, Forge |
| Minecraft versions | 1.19, 1.19.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.11, 26.1.2, 26.2 |
| Environment | Client |
Particle Rain is a client-side Java mod that replaces the default weather with particle effects, then adds fog, wind and sandstorms on top. It builds for Fabric on 1.19 to 26.2, NeoForge on 1.21.1 to 1.21.8 and Forge on 1.20 to 1.20.1. It is not supported on servers, so install it on your own client only.
Loaders and dependencies
- Fabric, newest build (1.21.9): requires Fabric API, with Mod Menu optional.
- NeoForge, newest build (1.21.1): requires nothing else.
- Forge, newest build (1.20.1): requires nothing else.
- Older builds differ. Fabric 1.20 to 1.21.10 builds need YetAnotherConfigLib, and Fabric 1.19 to 1.21.4 builds need Cloth Config API. Older NeoForge and Forge builds may also need YACL.
The newest builds on all three loaders are tagged beta, so expect rough edges. Drop the jar and any required dependency into your mods folder and launch the matching loader profile.
What it changes
Rain falls at an angle as if blown by wind, and the wind strengthens in storms. Snow particles rotate slowly as they fall. Dry biomes, modded ones included, get sandstorms of dust and shrubs that take the colour of the block below.
Rain and water particles follow the biome's water tint. Ripples appear on water and match your resource pack's resolution. Streaks run down hard walls, and mist hangs in wet or spooky biomes and after rainfall. Per-weather haze exists too, but it is off by default because it can look odd with some shaders or run poorly on older systems. Puddles now live in a separate mod, Puddles and Floods.
Configuration and compatibility
Open the config with the /particlerain command or your loader's mod list menu. You can disable, add or edit effects for specific blocks and biomes. Resource packs can ship or override effects through assets/particlerain/particles.json, and the mod builds its textures from the game's weather textures, so packs need no extra particle art.
- Rain in deserts usually comes from season mods such as Serene Seasons, not from Particle Rain.
- Particull hides the weather effects, so remove it.
- Particle Core can cause flickering. Set its culling mode to bounding box or blacklist the particles.
- Particle Tweaks crashes on 1.20 with the latest version. Use 1.1.1.
- Complementary shaders can show a black sun. Disable Sun/Moon during rain in their settings.

Questions about Particle Rain.
5 questions
How do I install Particle Rain?
Pick the build that matches your loader and Minecraft version, then put its jar in the mods folder along with any required dependency. On Fabric that means Fabric API for the newest builds. Launch the game with the matching Fabric, Forge or NeoForge profile, and open the settings with the /particlerain command.
Does Particle Rain work on multiplayer servers?
Particle Rain is client-side, and server installs are unsupported. You install it on your own game only, and the weather effects are drawn locally on your screen. Do not put it in a server's mods folder. The mod is required on the client and has no server component to install.
Is Particle Rain compatible with shaders?
Support varies by Minecraft version, and some shader packs do not fully support particles. The optional haze effects are off by default because they can look odd with some shaders. With Complementary shaders, a black sun can be fixed by disabling Sun/Moon during rain in their settings.
Why does it rain in deserts with Particle Rain?
Desert rain is typically a feature of mods that add seasons, such as Serene Seasons, not a bug or incompatibility in Particle Rain. Particle Rain only changes how weather looks. It adds sandstorms to dry biomes, so deserts can show dust and shrubs blowing across the ground.
Which Minecraft versions does Particle Rain support?
Fabric builds cover 1.19 to 26.2. NeoForge builds cover 1.21.1 to 1.21.8. Forge builds cover 1.20 to 1.20.1. Dependencies differ between older and newer builds, so read the requirements of the specific file you download.
