The One Probe (TOP for short) is a Minecraft Java mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge that shows on-screen information about the block you are looking at. It is a more immersive alternative to WAILA: the readout appears while you hold the probe in your main hand or off-hand. It is tagged for both client and server, and it must be installed on both.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.14.4 to 1.20.1. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Baubles, TESLA and Redstone Flux.
What the probe shows
The basic readout gives the block's name, the mod it comes from and the tool needed to harvest it. Beyond that, the details depend on the block.
- Stored RF energy, for blocks that support it.
- A list of every item inside an inventory such as a chest, shown while you sneak.
- Extra data from other mods through TOP's API. Deep Resonance uses it for crystals and liquids, and RFTools supports it too.
Installation
- 1.Install the loader that matches your build (Fabric, NeoForge or Forge) for the same Minecraft release. The Forge and NeoForge guide covers the setup.
- 2.Put the mod file in the mods folder of the game directory, normally .minecraft/mods.
- 3.Launch with the loader's profile and hold the probe to see the readout.
Configuration and trade-offs
The mod is very configurable. You can turn the tooltip on all the time, exactly like WAILA, or switch off any of the features above to suit your playstyle or modpack.
The cost of that flexibility is that the default experience depends on carrying the probe.
Questions about The One Probe.
4 questions
Does The One Probe need to be installed on the server?
Yes. The One Probe is not a client-only mod, so it must be present on the server as well as on every player's client. Files are tagged for both sides, so add the same mod to both before you join.
How do I make The One Probe show information all the time?
By default the readout appears only while you hold the probe in your hand or off-hand. The mod is configurable, so you can change the settings to show the information constantly, like WAILA. You can also disable individual features.
What is The One Probe compared with WAILA?
It is a more immersive version of WAILA. It shows a block's name, owning mod, harvest tool, stored RF energy and, while sneaking, the items in an inventory. Other mods can add their own lines through its API.
Which loaders does The One Probe support?
It has builds for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge. Check the loader and Minecraft release lists on this page, then match both to your installation before adding the file to your mods folder.
