FancyDialogs is a lightweight plugin for Paper and Folia that creates and manages the dialog screens Minecraft added in 1.21.6. Dialogs are plain JSON files that you attach to features such as a welcome screen for first-time joiners. It runs on the server only, so players install nothing.

Server software and versions

  • Folia and Paper: Minecraft 1.21.6 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What you can build with it

A dialog can hold text, buttons and input fields. Buttons can run commands, give items or open another dialog. Text accepts MiniMessage formatting, and placeholders from PlaceholderAPI and MiniPlaceholders work inside dialogs.

  • A welcome dialog shown the first time a player joins.
  • Tutorial dialogs that explain your server in chapters (still marked work in progress).
  • An open_dialog action for NPCs made with FancyNpcs.
  • Help pages, confirmation prompts for risky actions, shop menus and quest dialogs.

Plugin developers can also use FancyDialogs as a library. Default dialogs they define are saved in the plugins/FancyDialogs/data/dialogs folder, so administrators can edit them for their own server.

Installation and setup

Put the plugin file in the plugins folder and restart. The guide on installing plugins on a Paper or Spigot server covers the steps. Install PlaceholderAPI only if you want its placeholders in your text.

The plugin collects anonymous usage statistics, aggregated across servers and without IP addresses or server names. The documentation explains how to opt out.

Questions about FancyDialogs.

4 questions

How do I install FancyDialogs?

Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of your Paper or Folia server and restart it. Players join with a normal client and install nothing. Dialogs are JSON files that you attach to features such as the welcome screen for first-time joiners.

Does FancyDialogs work on Folia?

Yes. Folia has its own builds listed alongside Paper, covering the same range of releases. The newest build of each needs no other plugins installed.

Can players on older releases see the dialogs?

No. Dialogs were added in 1.21.6, so only players on 1.21.6 or newer can view them. Players on newer releases need nothing extra, because the plugin runs on the server only and players join with a normal client. Plan your welcome dialog around that cutoff.

Does FancyDialogs need PlaceholderAPI?

No, the newest builds require no other plugins. PlaceholderAPI and MiniPlaceholders are optional extras that let you place dynamic values, such as player names, inside dialog text.
