Towny is a server plugin that gives players a structured way to claim land, form towns, and build nations on a Minecraft Java server. Residents buy plots inside a town's claimed area, mayors set rules and taxes for their town, and towns can join together into nations with their own alliances and wars. It runs on Paper, Folia, and Purpur, and it is one of the oldest server plugins still under active development, tracing back to 2010.
How towns and nations work in Towny
Land in Towny is claimed in chunk-sized grid squares called townblocks. A town claims a set number of townblocks based on its resident count or a ratio the admin configures, and each resident can further set who is allowed to build, break, or use switches on their own plot. Towns can join a nation for shared alliances, enemies, and an optional daily upkeep paid from the town's bank. Everything, from claim limits to whether wilderness areas outside any town are protected, is controlled through the server admin's configuration.
- Land claiming by townblock, with per-plot build and use permissions.
- Optional daily taxes and nation upkeep paid through a shared economy.
- Wilderness protection settings for the unclaimed area between towns.
- Town and nation chat channels, teleporting, and death-spawn options.
- A wartime mode, supported by add-on plugins such as SiegeWar, for contesting townblocks.
Server software and Minecraft version support
The current Towny release, 0.103.2.0, runs on Paper, Folia, and Purpur and covers Minecraft 1.19 through 26.2, the year-based version line Mojang moved to for its quarterly drops. Craftbukkit and Spigot are no longer supported as of version 0.102.0.0. A separate, older build (0.101.2.0) still exists for Bukkit and Spigot servers, but it stops at Minecraft 1.21.7 and will not receive further updates. A server planning to stay on Bukkit or Spigot long term should treat that build as a dead end rather than a supported path.
Installing Towny
- 1.Download the Towny jar for your server software (Paper, Folia, or Purpur) from the linked source.
- 2.Drop the jar into the server's plugins folder and restart the server.
- 3.Run /towny to confirm the plugin loaded and review the generated config files.
- 4.Adjust townblock size, claim limits, and tax settings in the config before opening claiming to players.
- 5.Read the installation and setup pages on the Towny wiki for anything the config comments do not cover.
Permissions and economy plugins
Towny works with any Vault-compatible economy plugin for taxes, plot prices, and nation upkeep, and it supports permission plugins such as LuckPerms for controlling who can create towns, set taxes, or use admin commands. Neither is required to run Towny, but a server without an economy plugin loses the tax and upkeep mechanics that give mayors a reason to manage their town actively.

Questions about Towny.
5 questions
How do I install Towny on my server?
Download the Towny jar for your server software from the Modrinth or GitHub release page, drop it into the plugins folder, and restart the server. Towny generates its config files on first launch. Adjust townblock size, claim limits, and tax settings there before letting players start claiming land.
Does Towny work with Bukkit or Spigot?
Not on the current release. As of version 0.102.0.0, Towny only supports Paper, Folia, and Purpur. An older build, 0.101.2.0, still runs on Bukkit and Spigot but is capped at Minecraft 1.21.7 and receives no further updates, so it is a legacy option rather than a maintained one.
Which Minecraft version does Towny support?
The current release, 0.103.2.0, covers Minecraft 1.19 through 26.2 on Paper, Folia, and Purpur. Support tracks Mojang's newer year-based version numbering (26.1, 26.2, and so on) alongside the older 1.x releases, so a server on either numbering scheme is covered by the same build.
Does Towny need an economy plugin to work?
No, Towny runs without one, but taxes, plot prices, and nation upkeep all depend on a Vault-compatible economy plugin being installed. Without an economy plugin, towns and nations still exist and land can still be claimed, but the money-based mechanics that give mayors a reason to actively manage a town are inactive.
Can I modify and redistribute Towny's code?
Not on your own. Towny is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 3.0, so redistributing a modified build publicly is not permitted, even though running the plugin or keeping a private fork for your own server is fine. The TownyAdvanced team asks that anyone with a code change submit a pull request instead of publishing a separate fork.
