Cubic Sun & Moon is a small Java Edition resource pack from JoeFly that replaces Minecraft's flat, circular Sun and Moon sprites with 3D cube-shaped models. It is a single-purpose visual pack, and everything else in the game keeps its vanilla look.
What Cubic Sun & Moon changes
The pack reworks two things in the sky, plus one item. The Sun becomes a 3D cube, and the Moon becomes a 3D cube modeled across all eight of Minecraft's vanilla Moon phases, so its shape stays consistent as the Moon cycles. One in-game painting is also retextured to match.
- 3D cube Sun texture
- 3D cube Moon texture, modeled for all eight Moon phases
- One retextured painting
- No other blocks, items, or mobs are touched
How to install Cubic Sun & Moon
This pack is built for Java Edition only. Follow our guide to installing Minecraft resource packs, or use these steps:
- 1.Download the latest version from the Modrinth page.
- 2.Open Minecraft, go to Options, then Resource Packs, then Open Pack Folder.
- 3.Move the downloaded file into that folder.
- 4.Activate Cubic Sun & Moon from the Resource Packs list.
Compatibility with shaders and sky mods
Cubic Sun & Moon works with any shader pack that leaves the vanilla Sun and Moon texture alone, or that lets you switch back to it. BSL Shaders and Complementary Shaders both work this way. It is also compatible with mods that add their own sky objects, including Ad Astra, Astrocraft, Galacticraft, and Stellar View, plus any other mod that reuses the vanilla Sun and Moon texture. Keep Cubic Sun & Moon above those mods' resource packs in the Resource Packs list, or their textures take priority.
Pair it with a sky-focused pack like Dramatic Skys if you want clouds and lighting reworked too, since Cubic Sun & Moon only touches the Sun and the Moon.
Supported Minecraft versions
JoeFly's project page states support for every Minecraft version that allows resource packs, from Alpha 1.2.2 through the current release. The latest build, version 1.8.5, was published in December 2025 and lists compatibility through Minecraft 1.21.11. The pack also ships matching textures for April Fools versions.

Questions about Cubic Sun & Moon.
5 questions
How do I install Cubic Sun & Moon?
Download the pack from its Modrinth page, open Minecraft, go to Options, then Resource Packs, then Open Pack Folder, and move the file there. Activate it from the Resource Packs list. It is Java Edition only, and Minecraft may show it as Incompatible even though it works.
Does Cubic Sun & Moon work with shaders?
Yes, as long as the shader does not replace the Sun and Moon texture, or lets you turn its own sky off. BSL Shaders and Complementary Shaders both work this way. A shader that hard-codes a custom sky will override the cube Sun and Moon models.
Which Minecraft version does Cubic Sun & Moon support?
The project page states support for every version that allows resource packs, going back to Alpha 1.2.2. The latest build, version 1.8.5 from December 2025, lists compatibility through Minecraft 1.21.11.
Is Cubic Sun & Moon compatible with mods like Ad Astra or Galacticraft?
Yes. It works with mods that add their own sky objects, including Ad Astra, Astrocraft, Galacticraft, and Stellar View, plus any mod that reuses the vanilla Sun and Moon texture. Place Cubic Sun & Moon above those mods' resource packs in the Resource Packs list so its textures take priority.
Can I use Cubic Sun & Moon in a modpack or on a server?
The creator's terms allow it in modpacks and on public servers as long as you credit JoeFly somewhere. Videos and posts about the pack are fine too with credit, but redistributing a modified version of the pack is not allowed.
