Vanilla RTX is a ray tracing resource pack that adds materials to the default Minecraft blocks, so the familiar look carries over into RTX. It targets Bedrock on Windows and needs hardware that supports DXR. The aim is a native feel rather than a restyle.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.21.60 to 26.50.
What changes visually
Every vanilla block is covered, including Creative-only, Education and unobtainable ones. Blocks made of similar materials get consistent, detailed material designs that stay true to the original texture. Fog colors are tuned to match vanilla biomes, and glowing mobs keep their glow under ray tracing.
- Glowing entity fixes, including a bloom effect on the creaking and the copper golem's eyes.
- Invisibility now hides spiders, cave spiders, phantoms, endermen and alerted creakings under ray tracing.
- Candles gain a strong emissive wick, on 1.21.80 and later.
- Workarounds for decorated pots, the spyglass texture and missing point lights.
Which pack to pick
- Vanilla RTX uses 16x heightmaps, with 192x normal maps generated from height differences.
- Vanilla RTX Normals uses handcrafted 16x normal maps instead.
- Vanilla RTX Opus combines both and adds higher resolution normal maps.
How to install Vanilla RTX
Download the .mcpack from the CurseForge page and open it with Minecraft to import it. The steps in our Bedrock add-on guide apply here. Then switch the pack on under Resource Packs in your world settings.
A related project, the Vanilla RTX App, is an installable tool that launches RTX in one click, adjusts fog and lighting, and updates the packs automatically.
Known limitations
The pack works around many ray tracing bugs, but some remain. Cross-shaped plants still render wrongly, including glow berry vines, kelp, seagrass, pointed dripstone and weeping and twisting vines. Java Edition cannot load it.
Questions about Vanilla RTX.
4 questions
Does Vanilla RTX work on Java Edition?
No. Vanilla RTX is a Bedrock pack and Java cannot load it. It is meant for Bedrock on Windows 10 and 11, where Minecraft's ray tracing is available, and it also needs graphics hardware that supports DXR.
What is the difference between Vanilla RTX and Vanilla RTX Normals?
Vanilla RTX uses 16x heightmaps that define depth on blocks, with normal maps generated from them. Vanilla RTX Normals uses handcrafted 16x normal maps that define which way each pixel faces, which simulates curvature.
What is Vanilla RTX Opus?
Opus combines Vanilla RTX and Vanilla RTX Normals. It adds higher resolution normal maps with a greater level of detail. It is the option for players who want the most detailed surfaces and have the hardware for ray tracing.
Does Vanilla RTX change how Minecraft looks?
It keeps the vanilla art style. The pack adds materials and settings for ray tracing without restyling the textures. It also tunes fog colors to each biome and fixes several ray tracing rendering bugs.
