xali's Enhanced Vanilla is a 16x resource pack for Minecraft Java Edition that makes small, faithful upgrades to the base game instead of a full retexture. It keeps vanilla's palette and block proportions and cleans up details like barrels, fences, snow overlays, and pond plants rather than reinventing them, and the base pack needs no OptiFine to look right. This is the Java-only 16x project by xali (xalixilax on GitHub and Modrinth), a separate project from a similarly named Bedrock pack, "Enhanced Vanilla", made by a different creator.
What changes visually
The creator describes it as the texture pack for people who don't like using texture packs, and the gallery backs that up. Cacti gain small flowering variants, snow gets softer overlay edges, fence posts read more naturally at a distance, and ponds pick up cattails and flowering lily pads. Item textures for doors and other props get light redraws. Nothing here changes how blocks behave or reworks Minecraft's art direction, it just smooths edges the base game leaves rough.
Installing xali's Enhanced Vanilla
- 1.Download the zip from the Modrinth project page.
- 2.Drop the zip, unopened, into the resourcepacks folder inside your Minecraft installation.
- 3.In Minecraft, open Options, then Resource Packs, and move xali's Enhanced Vanilla to the active list.
- 4.Optional: install OptiFine, or Fabric with Continuity and CIT Resewn, to unlock the custom barrel textures.
Custom barrel textures and OptiFine
The pack ships a custom barrel texture system built on connected textures. Renaming a barrel in an anvil to a matching name applies a different label, the naming is case-insensitive, and multiple layers can stack on the same barrel. It only renders with a CIT-capable setup: OptiFine with Connected Textures set to Fancy and Custom Item Textures turned on, or Fabric paired with the Continuity and CIT Resewn mods. Every other texture in the pack works without either.
Supported Minecraft versions
The newest build, v1.11.2b, was published August 4, 2024, and its pack format targets up to Minecraft 1.21. That is over two years old as of this writing, so treat 1.21 as the practical ceiling rather than an ongoing guarantee: nothing about it has been confirmed to work on the year.drop releases Minecraft Java moved to afterward, and the project has not shipped an update to say otherwise. Readers who want a subtle vanilla-style pack with a similar 16x feel and more recent support can compare it against Vanilla Evolved or Programmer Art Fix.

Questions about xali's Enhanced Vanilla.
5 questions
Is xali's Enhanced Vanilla available for Bedrock Edition?
No. xali's Enhanced Vanilla is a Java Edition resource pack only. A separate, unrelated pack also called "Enhanced Vanilla" exists for Bedrock from a different creator, so double check the platform before downloading.
Which Minecraft version does xali's Enhanced Vanilla support?
The latest build, v1.11.2b from August 2024, targets pack format compatible up to Minecraft 1.21. The project has not been updated since, so newer Minecraft releases are untested and unconfirmed.
Does xali's Enhanced Vanilla need OptiFine?
Not for the base pack. OptiFine, or Fabric with Continuity and CIT Resewn, is only needed to render the pack's custom named-barrel textures. Everything else applies without either installed.
How do I install xali's Enhanced Vanilla?
Download the zip from Modrinth, place it in your Minecraft resourcepacks folder without unzipping it, then enable it from Options, Resource Packs in the game menu.
Is xali's Enhanced Vanilla safe to download?
The download comes from the creator's own Modrinth project page, which is the source linked on this page. It is licensed CC BY-NC 4.0 and has no ties to third-party mirrors or ad-gated hosts.
