Hyperopia is an experimental shader pack for Minecraft Java that inverts depth of field. Distant terrain stays sharp while nearby blocks blur. It runs on Iris and OptiFine, works on the client side only, and sits in the potato performance tier. Treat it as a perception study, not a realism pack.
Shader loaders and versions
- Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.7.10 to 26.3.
What the shader does
The pack reconstructs linear depth from the depth buffer and reverses how it is read. Objects close to the camera are treated as distant, and far objects become the focal subject. Blur comes from a circular kernel with two concentric sampling rings, and it grows quadratically as geometry approaches the camera.
The focus boundary does not hold still. A sinusoidally animated threshold drifts the focal plane forward and back, so the scene appears to breathe. Areas in focus get a light sharpening pass, and a restrained cool blue shift follows the inverted depth.
What it leaves out
- No bloom, volumetric lighting or screen-space reflections.
- No ambient occlusion, color grading or vignette.
- No custom lighting or shadow mapping.
Installation
The pack needs no extra dependency beyond the shader loader. If you have not set one up, the shader install guide covers it.
- 1.Install Iris or OptiFine.
- 2.Put the Hyperopia .zip in the shaderpacks folder.
- 3.Select Hyperopia in the loader's shader menu (Video Settings > Shader Packs for Iris).
Questions about Hyperopia.
4 questions
How do I install Hyperopia?
Install Iris or OptiFine, place the Hyperopia .zip in your shaderpacks folder, then select it in the loader's shader menu (Video Settings > Shader Packs for Iris). It needs no other mod or library, and it runs on the client side only.
Does Hyperopia work with both Iris and OptiFine?
Yes. Hyperopia lists builds for both Iris and OptiFine, and neither build requires another mod. Use whichever loader suits your setup and select the pack in its shader menu.
Is Hyperopia good for low-end PCs?
It is rated potato on Modrinth. The pack is mostly one composite post-processing pass with no shadow mapping, volumetrics or custom lighting, so its GPU requirements should be minimal compared with modern physically-based shader packs.
Does Hyperopia make Minecraft easier on the eyes?
No. It deliberately blurs nearby objects and keeps distant ones sharp, which conflicts with normal visual expectations. The creator describes it as a perceptual experiment, so it suits curiosity, not eye comfort.
