Sweep 'N Slash is a Bedrock addon by AzuriteBedrock and Seawhite that brings parts of Java's 1.9 combat update to Bedrock. It is Bedrock only. Since v3.0.0, stable releases no longer need the Beta API.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 26.0 to 26.40. The newest build optionally uses Better on Bedrock v1.2.1, Vanilla Knives, Flint Tools, Vanilla Battle Axes, Vanilla Throwing Knives, Copper Expansion and Cataclysmical: Bosses, Weapons & Dungeons.

What it adds

  • Sweep attacks for swords, and no knockback when a shield blocks.
  • Java damage calculation. A Netherite axe with Strength II, a critical hit and Smite V deals 36.5 damage to a husk, the most non-mace damage possible against undead or arthropods.
  • Custom knockback that sits close to Java's, though Bedrock's knockback rules differ at the core.
  • Saturation healing. Turning it on forces the Natural Regeneration gamerule off, so switch the rule back on when you disable the feature.
  • Attack indicator styles (Crosshair, Hotbar, Geyser) and customisable sweep particle colours that other players can see.
  • Toggles for the axe versus shield option and saturation healing for players with operator permission, plus a global config menu for operators opened with /sns:globalconfig.

Installation

Open the downloaded file with Bedrock so it imports, then enable the behavior pack and resource pack in each world's settings. Attack animations are switched on or off in the resource pack settings. The install guide covers the steps in detail.

Two release types exist. The stable release is the right pick for nearly everyone. The Gametest release exists for addons that use the Gametest API (such as Understudy and Sandbox), and it does not work on Aternos. Optional pairings include Better on Bedrock in the newest release.

Trade-offs and conflicts

Known conflicts include True Weapons and EmptyCoso's Dungeons Content, which handle item functions through hit events. The RLCraft Marketplace pack is incompatible because it uses player.json. Java Aspects and VDX Java/Desktop UI also clash, through sound handling and UI respectively.

Offhand use, hold-to-block shields and a Sweeping Edge enchantment are not included. Sweep attacks carry Sweeping Edge I by default.

Questions about Sweep 'N Slash.

3 questions

Does Sweep 'N Slash need the Beta API?

No for stable releases. Since v3.0.0 the stable release runs without the Beta API. The Gametest release is separate and exists for addons that use the Gametest API, such as Understudy and Sandbox. It does not work on Aternos, so pick stable if unsure.

Is Sweep 'N Slash compatible with True Weapons?

No. True Weapons uses hit events to run item functions, and Sweep 'N Slash cannot recreate those functions. EmptyCoso's Dungeons Content has the same limit, and the RLCraft Marketplace pack conflicts because it uses player.json.

Does Sweep 'N Slash copy Java combat exactly?

Only in part. It adds sweep attacks, Java damage calculation and close knockback, but Bedrock's knockback rules differ at the core. Offhand use, hold-to-block shields and Java combat techniques such as attribute swapping are not included.
