Zombie Invade 100 Days is the most downloaded survival modpack in our Modrinth pool. Vanilla Perfected is the one whose own description promises to keep the vanilla feel, and Aged is the one that adds thirst, temperature and seasons. All twelve picks are Java Edition only, and every modpack we list is on the main listing.
How we picked these survival modpacks
We chose from the 44 Java modpacks we list. We took the 12 most downloaded whose own Modrinth description keeps survival play at the centre, ordered by Modrinth downloads read on 6 October 2026. Four pages in the pool come from another source and carry no count, so they are not ranked here. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. Some descriptions frame survival loosely, so each entry names a limit. For the whole pool sorted by downloads, see Most Downloaded Minecraft Modpacks on Modrinth.

Survival modpacks that stay close to vanilla
These three keep the base loop of gathering, building and fighting, and add to it. Inside each group the order follows downloads.
Better MC [FABRIC] - BMC2
Better MC [FABRIC] - BMC2
@Luna Pixel Studios · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its Modrinth summary calls it a proper Vanilla+ modpack. The description lists 100+ quests, overhauled world generation, new bosses and mobs, hundreds of added dungeons and structures, Waystones, Xaero's Minimap and free world sharing. It suits players who want vanilla progression with more to find. The limit is size: it names 280+ mods, and Modrinth marks both client and server as required, so everyone on a shared world needs the same set.
Vanilla Perfected
Vanilla Perfected
@demonjoeTV · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description aims to enhance the game while retaining that vanilla feel, with higher FPS, updated HUD and UI elements, mob animations and dungeon-inspired structures. It carries a Vanilla Tweaks resource pack with permission. Pick it if you want the lightest change to how survival plays. The limit: its newest file is marked beta, and its description says the modpack reflects one player's taste and was never meant to be more than that.
RealisticCraft
RealisticCraft
@brynblack · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description says it brings realism without drastically changing the underlying gameplay, listing a thirst and warmth system, redesigned combat, atmospheric sound and many performance mods. The credits name Tough As Nails, Serene Seasons, Terralith and Tectonic, and the source repository carries an MIT licence file. Pick it for survival that adds needs to manage. The limit: its newest file is an alpha, so expect rough edges.
Survival modpacks built around danger and horror
Here survival means staying alive against something that wants you gone. Check the warnings before you share any of these with a friend.
Zombie Invade 100 Days
Zombie Invade 100 Days
@FlameFire · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description calls it a remake of the Zombie Apocalypse modpack for newer Minecraft, with downed-player rescue, injury screen effects, dynamic trees and Spartan weapons. It suggests superflat worlds and fortifying around villages, though a normal world works too, and a Wild Book gives in-game help. Modrinth lists challenging, combat and multiplayer. The limit: its description says the only community is Chinese, so English support is thin, and it links no source code.
Cave Horror Project 1
Cave Horror Project 1
@JustErikSK · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description calls it a horror survival modpack with over 200 quests across chapters, mods such as The Anomaly and Cave Dweller, and Simple Voice Chat paired with a radio mod for walkie-talkies. It is for groups who want a story to follow. The limit: Modrinth marks client and server as required, so a friend joining needs the same modpack, and the licence label is All Rights Reserved.
The Horrors in the Fog
The Horrors in the Fog
@theernyclan · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description says it is meant to be terrifying and challenging, and funny at times. It adds From the Fog (known as the Herobrine mod), The Man From The Fog, The Midnight Lurker, Sanity and Weeping Angels, and it suggests playing with friends. The limit: its newest file is from October 2024 and it links no wiki, source or issue tracker, so little points to ongoing maintenance.
From the Caves
From the Caves
@qxdFox · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description calls it a simple horror modpack around the From the Caves mod: a single stalking entity with a four-phase system that unlocks events as you dig deeper and can alter blocks, buttons and levers. Pick it for a short, focused scare. The limit is its narrow scope. It lists only the adventure category, and it has the smallest follower count of these twelve, at 13 on Modrinth.
Survival modpacks that change how you start or settle
Most of these describe quests, survival needs or a farm economy, and SkyBlock Enhanced is the exception.
Prominence II Hasturian Era
Prominence II Hasturian Era
@ElocinDev · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description leads with a story campaign, a Talent Tree with 10 fates and 100 stat talents, forgeable artifact weapons and Mythic boss challenges, with mob scaling for multiplayer. It suits players who want an RPG layered over survival. The limit: survival is the setting here, not the system, because the description centres quests, classes and bosses, and the licence label is All Rights Reserved.
SkyBlock Enhanced
SkyBlock Enhanced
@Kd_Gaming1 · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Treat this as the odd one out. Its description calls it a Hypixel SkyBlock modpack with over 60 mods, a setup wizard, performance profiles and a config manager, and Modrinth lists it as client required and server unsupported. It fits players who want that one mode set up for them. The limit: it is not a standalone survival world, and you cannot host it as one.
Aged
Aged
@xR4YM0ND · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description calls it a challenging medieval modpack where realism rules: boil water for hydration, eat a balanced diet, keep warm, plan around seasons, assign jobs and face more than six bosses. The repository carries an MIT licence file. Pick it for survival with needs to manage. The limit: its FAQ says it has been built for singleplayer since v3.0.0, and its guide book probably will not work on servers.
Homestead
Homestead
@Tokimi · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description promises a cosy Vanilla+ survival experience with a questbook, custom world generation, tamable creatures, Create tuned to the setting and several bundled shaders, for solo players, small groups or community servers. The limit: it says it rebalances vanilla progression for a slower pace, so recipes and tool tiers will not match what you already know.
Society Sunlit Valley
Society: Sunlit Valley
@Chakyl · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Its description calls it a farming commerce modpack in the style of Stardew Valley, with a built-in economy, seasonal crops, a daily-resetting Skull Cavern, five skill trees and multiplayer protections. Pick it if survival to you means a farm. The limit: its description says some mods are not on Modrinth, so the game prompts you to fetch extra mods after launching. It is also the second smallest by downloads here.
What to check before you install one
Nine of the twelve top out at 1.20.1: Zombie Invade 100 Days, Better MC, Prominence II, Cave Horror Project 1, The Horrors in the Fog, Aged, Homestead, Society and From the Caves. Only Vanilla Perfected and SkyBlock Enhanced reach 26.2, and RealisticCraft stops at 1.21.11. Each pack names one loader in the table above, so see Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge if the difference is new to you. Eleven of the twelve are marked server required, so one shared world means one shared modpack.
A Modrinth modpack installs through a launcher that reads .mrpack files, and our modpack install guide covers that. Large packs may need more memory, so allocating more RAM is the next stop. For a shared world, read how to play modded Minecraft with friends.
How to choose between them
Decide the loader and release first, because nine of these stop at 1.20.1 and the Forge and Fabric split is fixed. Then decide the tone. Vanilla Perfected and Better MC describe themselves as vanilla-leaning, while Aged and RealisticCraft add thirst and temperature or warmth systems. Cave Horror Project 1, The Horrors in the Fog and From the Caves are the horror picks. Anything not covered here is on the modpack listing.
