The Minecraft mods for servers below are ones an admin installs once while players join with an unmodded client. C2ME is the most downloaded of the nine, and Open Parties and Claims adds chunk claims and parties. Every pick comes from the Java mods in our mod listing, where you can browse everything we left out.
How we picked these server-side mods
We started from the 454 Java mods we list and kept those whose stored environment says the server needs the mod and a player's client does not. We then sorted by Modrinth downloads as read on 6 October 2026. Within each group below, picks keep that download order. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.
| Mod | Loaders with a current release | Stored environment | Downloads on Modrinth | Last update on Modrinth |

What server-side only means for players
Server required with client optional or unsupported means a player can connect without the file in their own mods folder. Optional is not the same as pointless, because some of these add extras for players who choose to install them. Our client-side and server-side explainer defines the terms. Three well-known candidates failed the filter. Lootr and Take It Out store the client as required, and Chunky stores the server as optional, so none of them is a pick.
Mods that speed up the server
C2ME
C2ME
@ishland · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it if chunk generation and loading are what stall the server. Its Modrinth page says it spreads generation, I/O and loading across CPU cores, and that it does not change vanilla world generation by default. The trade-off is stated on the same page. Worlds vary run to run even with the same seed, and custom world generators from other mods may hit compatibility problems. Our listing shows a Fabric build only, and the newest file is tagged alpha. The licence is split, with MIT for most of the repository and All Rights Reserved for the OpenCL acceleration directory.
ServerCore
ServerCore
@Wesley1808 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it when lag spikes come from mobs, villagers or chunk ticking. Its page lists entity activation range, villager lobotomization, breeding caps and dynamic view and simulation distance. Features that change gameplay are off by default, so it only pays off once you edit the config. Forge builds stopped at 1.20.4, with the last file uploaded in November 2024, while Fabric and NeoForge are current. We found no licence file in its repository, and Modrinth lists MIT.
Very Many Players (Fabric)
Very Many Players (Fabric)
@ishland · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for a Fabric server with many players online. Its page describes area maps for packet sending and player lookups, caches for entity trackers, and its own chunk-sending mechanism. The page also says it is in early development and things are expected to break, and our newest file is tagged alpha. It suggests pairing the mod with Lithium. Its packet-priority change helps most when the server is not behind a reverse proxy such as Velocity. There is no Forge or NeoForge build.
Alternate Current
Alternate Current
@SpaceWalkerRS · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it when redstone dust is the lag source. Its page claims redstone dust adds up to 30 times less MSPT and says it keeps a high level of vanilla parity. We measured neither. It makes the update order of dust networks predictable rather than locational, so a contraption tuned to vanilla's order may behave differently. Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt files are current. Forge builds stopped at 1.20.4, with the last file from August 2023.
Mods that change how the world and players behave
No Enderman Grief
No Enderman Grief
@Jodek · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for a survival world where endermen keep carrying off blocks. It stops them picking blocks up, and it ships both as a mod and as a datapack. Its page warns against running the datapack and the mod together, so choose one. Newer files list 5555ff-lib as optional. Its source sits on Codeberg, we found no licence file, and Modrinth's label says MIT.
Drop Head
Drop Head
@Solmey · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it if you want a player's head to drop on death. Its page says it works by editing the player loot table. Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt files exist alongside a datapack. The separate Paper, Spigot and Purpur builds stopped in 2024, so a plugin server should not rely on them. The project links no source code, wiki or issue tracker, and Modrinth lists the licence as LGPL-3.0-only. Its page offers little beyond the loot table change.
Admin and survival tools
Open Parties and Claims
Open Parties and Claims
@thexaero · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it when players need chunk claims, forceloading and parties without a plugin server. Its page says owners get strong controls, with permission support for LuckPerms, FTB Ranks and Prometheus, and party support for Argonauts and FTB Teams. Players may add Xaero's Minimap and World Map to see claims, but they are not required. The trade-off is that the page calls the mod beta. Fabric and Quilt files need Fabric API and Forge Config API Port, and the newest Forge file needs the latter too.
Carpet Mod
Carpet Mod
@gnembon · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Choose it if you run the server as a technical admin. Its page lists /tick warp for testing farms over hours in minutes, hopperCounters for item breakdowns, /log for mobcap and TPS, and Scarpet, an in-game programming language. It is a toolkit of rules rather than a drop-in optimizer, so its effect depends on what you switch on, and its wiki lists the settings. Our listing shows a Fabric build only. Extensions are separate projects that its wiki catalogues.
Universal Graves
Universal Graves
@Patbox · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it for death chests on a Fabric server. Its page says it can work purely on the server, with configurable protection time, expiry and whether items drop afterwards. The catch sits in the README, which says model support needs a mod on clients, so the plain-client promise covers the default setup. The newest Fabric file needs Polymer, which has no page on our site. Quilt builds stopped after 1.21.1.
Before you install them on your server
Each file must match your server's loader and Minecraft version, and Fabric servers usually need Fabric API as well. Our Fabric install guide and modded server hosting guide cover the steps. Admins on Paper or Spigot should read the plugins roundup instead, because mods do not run there.
How to choose between them
Let the symptom decide. Chunk loading points to C2ME, mob and villager lag to ServerCore, high player counts to Very Many Players, and redstone to Alternate Current. Claims, permissions and graves point to Open Parties and Claims, Carpet Mod or Universal Graves, and your loader narrows the list further. For the rest of the Java catalogue, see the full mod listing.
