What carries over from Java mods and shaders to Bedrock

Java mods and Java shader packs do not run on Bedrock, and each edition has its own pack formats. This page sorts what carries over, what Bedrock offers instead, and what the sources leave open for phones.

Published Updated Checked

Java shader packs do not work on Bedrock Edition, and neither do Java mods. Bedrock has its own route to better lighting, Mojang's Vibrant Visuals, and its own pack formats. Our shaders listing covers the Java Edition packs. This page sorts what stays on Java, what Bedrock uses instead and what the sources leave open.

Facts come from Mojang's Vibrant Visuals article (22 March 2025), the Bedrock Wiki and the Minecraft Wiki, all read on 14 October 2026. We did not run any shader, mod or pack on either edition.

Short answer for each Java Edition thing

What each Java Edition item means for Bedrock, from Mojang, the Bedrock Wiki, the Minecraft Wiki and loader install facts, read 14 October 2026

Java mods on Bedrock

A Java mod needs a loader (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt) matched to its Minecraft version, and its .jar sits in a mods folder. Bedrock has no such loader, so the file has nothing to run on. The Bedrock counterpart is the add-on, which is a separate format made for Bedrock. The trade-off is that a mod you like on Java has no automatic Bedrock twin. Someone must have written an add-on.

Java shaders on Bedrock and what Vibrant Visuals is

Java shader packs need Iris or OptiFine, both Java Edition mods. Bedrock cannot run either, so every pack in the Java shader lists stays on Java. The Minecraft Wiki says its shader feature is exclusive to Java Edition and that the older Bedrock shader feature has been removed.

The Bedrock Wiki gives the dates for the old custom Bedrock shaders. They are incompatible with Render Dragon, so they stopped working on Windows and consoles past 1.16.200 and on other devices past 1.18.30.

Mojang's answer is Vibrant Visuals, which its article calls a visual graphics upgrade with directional lighting, volumetric fog, water reflections and subsurface scattering on leaves and grass. It was announced as first for Bedrock Edition on select devices, with testing through preview and beta. Mojang says it is cosmetic and does not change gameplay, so players with and without it can share a Realm. It says Java Edition will get Vibrant Visuals in the future, with no date given. For the head-to-head, read Vibrant Visuals vs shaders. To switch it on, see turning on shaders in Bedrock.

Java resource packs and Bedrock resource packs

Both editions have resource packs, but the files differ. Java takes a .zip in the resourcepacks folder and shows an incompatibility warning if the pack targets another game version. Bedrock imports a .mcpack or .mcaddon and switches packs on per world. The sources do not describe converting one to the other, so treat a pack as belonging to the edition it was made for. Our guide to Bedrock texture packs on phones and tablets covers the Bedrock side.

Java data packs against Bedrock add-ons

A Java data pack is a .zip in a world's datapacks folder, and the world picks it up after /reload or a restart. Add-ons are Bedrock Edition only, and Java cannot load them. The sources we read do not say whether Bedrock accepts a Java data pack, so we make no claim either way. The Java steps are in how to install data packs.

Phones and tablets

Bedrock Edition is the edition on phones and tablets, and add-ons and packs open with Minecraft there. Mods, Iris and OptiFine are Java Edition, so they do not apply. Mojang's article says it is still investigating how Vibrant Visuals runs across Bedrock devices, hoping to bring it fully or partially to as many as possible. That article lists no phone or tablet models, and we found no later device list in the sources.
