Is Minecraft on PS5 and how it differs from PS4

Minecraft has a native PS5 release, launched on 22 October 2024. This page covers what changed from PS4, who gets it free, and what it means for add-ons and cross-play.

Published Updated Checked

Yes, Minecraft is on PS5. It is a native Bedrock Edition release that launched on 22 October 2024, and Mojang says it is optimized for the console's hardware. If you already own Bedrock Edition for PS4, you can claim the PS5 release at no cost. Facts below were read on 19 October 2026.

What the PS5 release is and where it applies

Mojang's launch announcement (minecraft.net, 22 October 2024) calls it a native version of Minecraft for PlayStation 5, released alongside the Bundles of Bravery drop. It belongs to Bedrock Edition, which is why Mojang describes its cross-play in terms of other Bedrock devices. For the wider split between the two games, see Minecraft Java vs Bedrock Edition.

How the PS5 release differs from the PS4 one

Mojang's stated difference is performance: the PS5 release has a greater render distance while still running in 4K resolution at 60 FPS. Its announcement gives no matching figures for the PS4 release, so we cannot put numbers side by side. We did not run either one, and we make no speed comparison of our own.

The PlayStation Store page for PS5 also lists Vibrant Visuals, which it calls Minecraft's biggest official visual enhancement. It carries two limits: Marketplace Worlds and Texture Packs are not compatible with the mode, and split screen is not supported with it. The game switches to Fancy or Simple rendering if several players join locally. For how it compares with Java shaders, see Vibrant Visuals vs shaders.

Do PS4 owners get the PS5 release

Mojang says owners of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for PS4 can claim the PS5 release for free. You open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 while logged in and claim the digital license. Owners of the PS4 disc must keep inserting that disc to play on PS5. Anyone with no PlayStation version can buy one from the PlayStation Store or a video game retailer.

What it means for add-ons and Marketplace content

Because the PS5 release is Bedrock, add-ons are the format that applies to it, and Java mods do not. The PlayStation Store page says Marketplace Add-Ons, skins and Persona items work with Vibrant Visuals. Console add-ons come through in-game purchases rather than file imports, which our console add-ons guide covers. For the format itself, see what Minecraft add-ons are, and for what survives from Java, what carries over from Java mods and shaders to Bedrock.

The store page lists in-game purchases as optional, with Token packs from $1.99 (320 Tokens) to $49.99 (8800 Tokens). It also says a Marketplace Pass or Realms Plus subscription gives access to 150+ worlds, skin and texture packs, refreshed monthly. What Marketplace Pass is explains how that differs from Minecoins.

Cross-play and online limits

Mojang says the PS5 release supports cross-play with any other Bedrock Edition device, including on a Realm. The store page adds that PS Plus is required for online play, that online sessions support up to 8 players with PS Plus, and that local play is 1 to 4 players. Realms Plus is listed for up to 10 friends on a private server. Which devices play together lists the other platforms, and how to play with friends covers the setup.

What the sources do not say

  • Mojang gives no performance figures for the PS4 release, so there is no stated PS5 versus PS4 gap beyond render distance.
  • Prices are US store prices read on one date and may differ by region or retailer.
  • A Target listing for the boxed PS5 release exists, but it carried no usable product details when we read it.
