In Tetra vs Tinkers' Construct, pick Tinkers' Construct for smelting and a part-and-modifier tool system, and Tetra for swapping parts on vanilla gear and honing it through use. Pick Silent Gear for blueprints, graded materials and NeoForge builds past 1.20.1.

This comparison reads the creators' pages, the Tetra website and Modrinth data on 9 October 2026. We did not play or test any of the three, so every quality statement below is the project's own wording.

All three are Java Edition mods. None lists a Fabric or Quilt build in the data we read, so a Fabric pack cannot use them.

Loaders and Minecraft versions

The deciding fact for most readers is the version range. Tinkers' Construct and Tetra both stop at 1.20.1 on Forge and NeoForge. Tinkers' Construct has the longest Forge history, with builds from 1.6.4, and its Modrinth page says it currently has builds for 1.18.2 and later along with a few older versions.

Silent Gear is the only one of the three with NeoForge builds beyond 1.20.1, from 1.20.4 up to 26.1.2. Its Forge builds end at 3.6.7, dated 29 August 2025, while NeoForge builds continue. Its page text still says Forge is required, so check the loader on the build you download. If you are unsure which version your pack should sit on, read which Java version suits mods and Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge.

How each mod builds a tool

Tetra changes the vanilla tool you already hold

Tetra

@mickelus · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.19 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Tetra starts with a mallet. You use it on a crafting table to turn it into a workbench, then place a vanilla weapon, tool, shield or bow in it. There you add, remove or change parts and preview the stats by hovering over materials. Items improve through use: you hone them and choose which stats to raise, and more improvements unlock after repeated honing.

Modifying needs different tools depending on the material, kept in your inventory, a toolbelt or on a nearby tool rack. Parts can be enchanted at the workbench, or the whole item at the regular enchanting table. Powerful parts and schematics are found by scavenging ancient ruins or through trade and barter, according to the Tetra website.

Tinkers' Construct builds from parts and keeps adding

Tinkers' Construct

@KnightMiner · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.6.4 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Tinkers' Construct puts tools together from parts in many combinations, then modifies them until they become something else. Its page says tools never disappear and can be named and changed. Part builders, tinker stations and modifier workstations handle the building. A melter, alloyer, smeltery and foundry handle molten metals, and tools can be forged in the part builder or from melted metal in the multiblock smeltery.

It also changes world generation. The page lists slime islands in the overworld, nether and end, slimy geodes underground and cobalt ore in the nether. That is a larger footprint than the other two.

Silent Gear crafts from blueprints and graded materials

Silent Gear

@SilentChaos512 · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

Every Silent Gear item needs a main part. Tools and weapons add a rod, and ranged weapons and fishing rods also add a cord. Armor uses plates with an optional lining, and elytra need wings plus a binding. Blueprints are reusable, while a template is consumed on one use. Its README says blueprints remove recipe conflicts.

Materials carry grades from E up to MAX, assigned randomly in a material grader that consumes catalysts. Materials and parts can be added with JSON files in data packs, and gear recipes can be changed the same way. Its list of gear includes paxels, hammers, excavators, a saw for whole trees, katana, daggers, slingshots, armor, elytra and curios.

What each mod leaves out

  • Tetra describes no molten-metal system and no new ores on its pages. It also has no source repository linked, and its Modrinth licence label is All Rights Reserved. Its page allows modpack use if the mod is distributed through Modrinth or CurseForge.
  • Tinkers' Construct needs Mantle, and its page asks modpacks to take full responsibility for user support. Its Forge builds for 1.18.2 to 1.20.1 list Just Enough Items as optional.
  • Silent Gear adds a few ores and metals of its own, but the items needed to use common metals such as tin, silver and lead are not added by Silent Gear. Those come from other mods. It needs Silent Lib.

Which mod suits which pack

The pack usually decides. A pack already built on Forge 1.20.1 can take any of the three. A NeoForge pack on 1.21 or later has only Silent Gear among these in our data.

Tetra suits a pack where players keep using vanilla-style tools and want to alter them, with exploration and trade as the source of parts. Silent Gear suits a pack author who wants to rewrite materials and recipes through data packs. If you are assembling one, see how to make a modpack and what a modpack is.

How to choose between them

  • Pick Tinkers' Construct for the longest Forge history, the smeltery and an MIT licence, accepting Mantle and a beta newest build.
  • Pick Tetra for hands-on part swapping and honing, accepting a 1.20.1 ceiling and no linked source code.
  • Pick Silent Gear for blueprints, grades, curios and data pack control, accepting that Forge builds stopped at 3.6.7 and that Silent Lib is required.

We give no balance or performance verdict between them because no source in our data measures one. For the file steps, follow how to install mods on Java Edition.
