Better Craftables is a Minecraft Java mod and data pack that adds quality-of-life crafting and smelting recipes to vanilla. It ships for Fabric, Quilt, Forge and NeoForge, plus a plain data pack that needs no loader. It must be present on the host side, while players who join can go without it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric and Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Better Unpackables; builds for 1.21.2 to 1.21.5 require Fabric API; builds for 1.20 to 1.21.1 require Fabric API.
  • Forge and NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21.5 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Better Unpackables; some builds for 1.21.5 require Fabric API.

What the recipes change

The pack does not add a new progression. It fills gaps in vanilla crafting and trims the expensive corners. The wiki lists every crafting and smelting recipe in full.

  • Craftable coral blocks and bells.
  • Smelting for raw ore blocks.
  • Alternative recipes for recovery compasses and sticky pistons.
  • Cheaper recipes for smithing templates.
  • Redyeing for candles, concrete, terracotta and more.

Several ideas are credited to other projects and players: Vanilla Tweaks, PhoenixSC (green dye from blue and yellow dyes, brown dye from blue, yellow and red dyes) and Etho (Netherrack plus sulfur for cinnabar). For the reverse direction, the creator points to a companion pack, Better Unpackables, which adds unpacking recipes.

Two ways to install

  1. 1.Mod route: pick the file that matches your Minecraft release and loader, drop it in the mods folder, then launch with that loader's profile. The install guide for Java mods covers the steps.
  2. 2.Data pack route: use the plain data pack, which has no loader and covers 1.19 to 26.3.

Trade-offs

The recipe set is deliberately narrow, so expect convenience rather than a content overhaul. Pick the data pack if you want the fewest moving parts.

Questions about Better Craftables.

3 questions

Is Better Craftables a mod or a data pack?

Both. The same recipes ship as a plain data pack and as a mod for Fabric, Quilt, Forge and NeoForge. The data pack needs no loader and reaches back to 1.19, while the mod routes suit people who already run one of those loaders.

Do players need Better Craftables to join a multiplayer world?

No. It is required on the host side, but it is optional for players who join.

Where can I see every recipe Better Craftables adds?

The project wiki on GitHub has dedicated Crafting Recipes and Smelting Recipes pages with the full list. The Modrinth gallery also gives a short visual look at the main additions.
