Dynamic Trees

Trees grow from seeds into multi-block giants, compete for light and spread into forests. Chop the base and the whole tree comes down at once.

Dynamic Trees is a Java mod that replaces vanilla tree growth with multi-block trees that grow from seed to maturity. It runs on NeoForge, Fabric, Quilt and Forge, and it is required on both sides of a multiplayer setup. The dynamic trees mod keeps vanilla textures, so resource packs still apply.

Loaders and releases

  • NeoForge: 1.21.1 to 26.1.2, newest release 1.8.0-BETA04, no required dependency.
  • Fabric and Quilt: 1.21.1 only, newest release 1.7.2-BETA, requires Forge Config API Port.
  • Forge: 1.16.4 to 1.20.1, newest release 1.4.11 (stable), no required dependency.
  • Dynamic Trees Plus is an optional add-on on NeoForge and on Forge 1.19.2 to 1.20.1.

How the trees behave

A tree is a structure of rooty soil, branches and leaves. It starts from a seed, planted by hand or self-planted on dirt, grass or podzol with open sky above. Growth depends on biome, temperature and rainfall, and each species uses its own growth algorithm.

  • Trees compete for light, so dense stands grow tall and thin and form dark canopies.
  • Leaves cut off from a branch, or starved of light, die.
  • Bone meal on rooty soil raises fertility, letting a tree outgrow its mature size.
  • Potions of Depletion, Burgeoning, Transformation and Gigas alter growth, species or size.
  • Thin branches climb like ladders, and landing on leaves cancels fall damage.

Seasons and compatibility

The season system works with Serene Seasons by default. Trees slow or stop growing with the climate, and fruits have set flowering and harvest seasons. At least one season mod must be installed to activate it.

Worldgen can be switched off so vanilla trees still spawn. Drops stay vanilla (logs, sticks, leaves), and branches cannot be obtained in survival. The trade-off is the multi-block structure itself, which changes how every tree in a world behaves.

Questions about Dynamic Trees.

4 questions

Which loaders does Dynamic Trees support?

Dynamic Trees has releases for NeoForge, Fabric, Quilt and Forge. NeoForge covers 1.21.1 to 26.1.2, Forge covers 1.16.4 to 1.20.1, and Fabric and Quilt cover 1.21.1 only. A release works only with the loader it was made for. Fabric and Quilt releases require Forge Config API Port.

Does Dynamic Trees work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, but it must be installed on both sides. The mod is required for players and for the host, so everyone who plays and everyone who hosts needs it installed. Every player needs the same loader and a matching release, whichever of the four loaders you pick.

Does Dynamic Trees need any other mods?

Fabric and Quilt releases require Forge Config API Port. NeoForge and Forge releases require nothing. Dynamic Trees Plus is optional on some releases. Seasonal growth also needs a season mod such as Serene Seasons, but only if you want that system active.

Can I still get vanilla trees with Dynamic Trees installed?

Yes. Worldgen can be disabled so vanilla trees keep spawning, and vanilla trees function normally. Seeds and saplings can be crafted into each other with a dirt bucket. Dynamic trees drop ordinary logs, sticks and leaves, so nothing they produce is exclusive.
