| Environment | Client, Server |
Armored Elytra is a Fabric mod that merges a chestplate and an elytra into one item. It suits both client and server play, but the logic runs on the server and a client install only adds visuals. If you searched for an armored elytra data pack, the Fabric mod is the route with current releases, while the plain datapack stopped at 1.21.4.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.21 to 26.2 require Fabric API.
Forging and splitting
- Forge: combine any chestplate with an elytra in the anvil.
- Split: put the armored elytra in the grindstone to get both original items back.
- Trims and leather color show on the item icon, alongside the elytra at the back.
Client and server roles
The mod is required on the server. Players who also install it see both the elytra and the chestplate on their model, and get custom item icons. Any custom texture pack is supported, though the icons might not come out totally correct depending on the item icons. That rendering is drawn in code rather than from a resource pack. Players without the mod can still use the older Armored-Elytra-Icons-v1.14.0.zip resource pack for default armors, though support for it may be dropped.
Two ways to install
- 1.Fabric mod: set up Fabric using our Fabric guide, put the mod file in the mods folder, and launch with the Fabric profile.
- 2.Add Fabric API to the same folder if the file you picked calls for it.
- 3.Datapack: a plain datapack for 1.21.4 only, now stopped at 1.4.0-r.
Tested companions
These mods and datapacks are listed as tested and compatible. Advanced Netherite passes its pacifying effects from mod chestplates to the armored elytra. Elytra Trims lets you forge elytra that already carry trims, and both trims show. Detail Armor Bar Reconstructed shows elytra icons in the armor bar. The Stellarity datapack adds its item attributes, such as lower gravity, and the Vanilla Tweaks Armored Elytra datapack also works, including splitting in the grindstone.
Questions about Armored Elytra.
4 questions
How do I make an armored elytra?
Place any chestplate and an elytra in an anvil and take the result. That output is the armored elytra. To undo it, put the item in a grindstone and you get the original chestplate and elytra back.
Does Armored Elytra need to be installed on the server?
Yes. All the logic is handled on the server, so it is required there. Players can join without it, but they will not see the combined player model or the custom item icons unless they install it too.
Is there an armored elytra data pack version?
A plain datapack exists, but it is stopped. Its last file, 1.4.0-r from January 2025, targets 1.21.4 only. For anything newer, the Fabric mod is the maintained option and covers Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3.
Does Armored Elytra work with Forge or NeoForge?
No. Fabric is the only loader with current builds, covering Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3, and the mod is described as an all in one elytra and chestplate combiner for Fabric. The only other build is a stopped datapack whose last file, 1.4.0-r, targets 1.21.4 and dates from January 2025.
