FTB Library

The shared code layer for Feed The Beast mods, with a sidebar, an SNBT-based config system and an in-world NBT editor. Other FTB mods call for it, so most players install it as a requirement.

FTB Library is the shared foundation behind Feed The Beast's mods, such as FTB Chunks, and it ships for NeoForge and Forge. Its files are tagged for both sides, so it belongs in singleplayer and multiplayer setups alike. On its own it adds a sidebar and a handful of commands. Its real job is to be present when another FTB mod asks for it.

Loaders and versions

What it provides

  • A structured framework for building GUIs, used across the FTB mod suite.
  • A sidebar at the top left of the inventory screen. Other mods can add their own buttons to it through JSON files.
  • A config library built on SNBT (String Named Binary Tag), which also handles data storage and manipulation.
  • An interactive NBT editor for block entities, entities and players.

Commands

The command worth knowing is /ftblibrary nbtedit. It opens a GUI where you browse and modify NBT data directly. The other commands are plain utilities. /ftblibrary day and /ftblibrary night set the time, and /ftblibrary rain starts or stops rain.

Installing it

Match the file to your loader and the release you play, then place it in the mods folder alongside the files for any other mod that needs it. If you have not set up a loader yet, the guide to installing Forge and NeoForge covers it.

Questions about FTB Library.

4 questions

What is FTB Library used for?

FTB Library is common code for Feed The Beast mods. It supplies the GUI framework, the inventory sidebar, an SNBT-based config system and an NBT editor. Mods such as FTB Chunks rely on it, which is why it usually appears as a required file rather than something you install for its own features.

How do I open the NBT editor in FTB Library?

Run the /ftblibrary nbtedit command in chat. It opens a graphical editor where you can change the NBT data of block entities, entities or players. It is an interactive browser, so you can inspect values before editing them instead of typing raw tag strings by hand.

Can I use FTB Library in my own mod?

FTB says it is not designed for non-FTB mods, but it does not explicitly forbid it. If you integrate it, expect possible difficulties. You take full responsibility for any compatibility or integration issues, so test carefully. Note that the code is All Rights Reserved to Feed The Beast Ltd, with visible source.

Does FTB Library need to be on both sides in multiplayer?

Its files are tagged for both sides, so it is not a one-side mod. It is common code for FTB mods such as FTB Chunks, and its newest builds are listed for NeoForge and Forge. Check the page of the mod that needs it for what that mod asks for.
