Inventory Management is an inventory management mod for Minecraft Java that adds sort, transfer and auto-stack buttons to your inventory and containers. It runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and works in single player from the client alone. In multiplayer it must be installed on both the client and the server.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric and Quilt: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; some builds for 1.18.2 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies.
  • Forge and NeoForge: Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What the buttons and tools do

  • Sort any container or your inventory, alphabetically or in creative-menu order.
  • Transfer all moves everything from one inventory to another, placing or taking in a single click.
  • Auto-stack tops up matching stacks already in a container without disturbing anything else.
  • Locked slots, set with Ctrl/Cmd+click, are skipped by sort, transfer and stack.
  • Hotbar swapping lets you hold a key and scroll a main-inventory row into your hotbar.
  • Durability alerts warn when gear runs low, with optional auto-replace just before a tool breaks.
  • Smart grouping keeps variant families, such as every wool colour or all planks, together when sorting.

Installing on a client and a server

Put the mod file for your loader in the mods folder, matching your Minecraft release. The guide on installing Minecraft mods on Java Edition covers the steps. For multiplayer, the same mod goes on the server too.

Configuration

Settings live in inventorymanagement.toml in your config folder. With Mod Menu installed, the same options appear in its UI with tooltips. Each feature toggles on its own, and a master switch, modEnabled, hides all buttons and stops every behaviour.

Defaults favour sorting. Sort order starts alphabetical, and the three button groups are on. Durability auto-replace is off until you enable it, and a second option relaxes its matching from the same item and enchantments to the same category. Mod authors get a loader-agnostic API and a datapack convention to register their own item variant groups for sorting.

Questions about Inventory Management.

4 questions

Does Inventory Management work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, but it must be installed on both your client and the server. Single player only needs the client. The one partial exception is the low-durability alert, which is purely client-side and works on any server, even vanilla.

How do I stop certain slots from being sorted?

Hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) and click a slot to lock it. Sort, transfer all and auto-stack all skip locked slots, so your hotbar favourites or reserved items stay exactly where you put them.

Can I turn off features I do not want?

Yes. Every feature can be enabled or disabled separately in inventorymanagement.toml, including the sort, transfer and stack buttons, hotbar swapping and durability alerts. A master switch, modEnabled, turns the whole mod off without removing it.

How do I change the sort order?

Set sorting.sortMode in the config to alphabetical, which is the default and orders by item name, or creative, which follows the creative-menu order. Mod Menu exposes the same option in its UI if you have it installed.
