MineColonies is a Java mod for NeoForge and Forge that lets you build a thriving town of NPC workers and specialised buildings. The minecolonies mod is tagged for both sides, so multiplayer hosts and players all need it. It is developed by the Let's Dev Together community and is free and open-source.
Loaders and versions
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.21.1. The newest build requires Structurize, Multi-Piston, BlockUI, Domum Ornamentum and TownTalk.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.10.2 to 1.20.1. The newest build requires Structurize, Multi-Piston, BlockUI, Domum Ornamentum and TownTalk; some builds for 1.10.2 to 1.19.4 require Structurize, Multi-Piston, BlockUI and Domum Ornamentum; some builds for 1.14 to 1.16.5 require Structurize; some builds for 1.12.2 require Structurize.
What the colony does
You found a colony, place buildings and hire citizens to staff them. More than 10.000 schematics let each town look different, and you can build inside a mountain, on top of one, under the ocean or in the sky. Workers include:
- Builders, Farmers, Fishers and Foresters
- Guards, Miners and Smelters
- Bakers, Cooks, Couriers and Composters
- Five types of animal herders, with more jobs still in development
Specialised buildings include the Warehouse, House, Town Hall, Barracks, Library, University and School. Walls, parks and fountains cover the decorative side.
Installing it
- 1.Install NeoForge or Forge at the same release the MineColonies file you choose was made for, as covered in our Forge and NeoForge guide.
- 2.Pick the MineColonies file made for that loader and release. Older files differ in what they need, so check the requirements shown with the one you choose.
- 3.Put the mod file and every required library in the mods folder.
- 4.Launch with the loader profile and create or load a world.
The trade-off is the dependency chain. MineColonies will not start without its libraries, and the newest Forge file is marked beta, so stable-minded players should read the file notes first. The creators advise using the latest available release for the most fixes.

Questions about MineColonies.
4 questions
Does MineColonies work in multiplayer?
Yes. MineColonies files are tagged for both sides, so it is built for multiplayer worlds. The newest builds also require Structurize, Multi-Piston, BlockUI, Domum Ornamentum and TownTalk, so those libraries belong in the mods folder alongside the mod file. Check the file notes for the build you choose.
Does MineColonies work on Bedrock?
No. MineColonies is a Java mod that needs Forge or NeoForge, and Bedrock cannot load mods of that kind. Bedrock players need a different format, and this project does not ship one.
Is MineColonies free and open-source?
Yes. The code is on GitHub under the GNU General Public License v3, and the developers describe the mod as free. Patreon support is optional, and CurseForge itself lists no licence, so the repository file is the one to read.
Where can I find help or the wiki for MineColonies?
The developers maintain a wiki, a Discord community and a GitHub issue tracker. Search existing issues before filing a new one. Support is not given when the add-ons the developers name are installed, namely Tweaks, Compatibility, Easycolony, Pathfinding Edition, Quality Of Life, MindOfTheColony and Transit Networks.
