Minecraft Found Footage is a Backrooms mod for Fabric on 1.20.1, built by SpacePotato. It adds custom shaders and camera effects that imitate found footage videos, then drops you into a chain of liminal levels. It must be installed on both sides, so players and the host of a multiplayer world each need it.
How you reach the Backrooms
Suffocate yourself in any way for long enough and you noclip out of the world. From there you travel through the levels to escape:
- Level 0, the Backrooms everyone knows
- Level 1, the Habitable Zone
- Level 2, Pipe Dreams
- Level 324, the Forgotten Station
- The Poolrooms
- The Infinite Grass Field, which the creator warns is different
A skinwalker can steal a target's skin. It does not spawn naturally in singleplayer. Your inventory from before the Backrooms is saved and can be restored with a command. Full level descriptions live in the project wiki.
Commands
- /skinwalker gives the skinwalker your target's skin if it refuses to spawn.
- /release frees a target whose skin was stolen.
- /backroomsevent triggers an event manually.
- /gimmemyinventoryback restores the inventory saved before the Backrooms.
- /level teleports you to a chosen level.
Setup and requirements
Install Fabric first, using the Fabric install guide if needed. The creator's checklist asks for Simple Voice Chat and GeckoLib. Veil is already bundled, so do not add it. Config opens through Mod Menu.
- 1.Use Fast or Fancy graphics, never Fabulous.
- 2.Leave Veil's deferred resource pack enabled.
- 3.Keep Sodium and Iris out of the mods folder.

Does the Minecraft Found Footage mod work with Sodium or Iris?
No. The mod uses Veil for its shaders and camera effects, and on 1.20.1 Veil is incompatible with both Sodium and Iris. Remove them before launching. Use Fast or Fancy graphics, since Fabulous is also unsupported.
How do you get into the Backrooms in this mod?
Suffocate yourself in any way for long enough and you will noclip into the Backrooms. From there you must pass through every level to escape. The /level command can teleport you to a specific level manually.
Does this Backrooms mod work on Mac?
No. The creator states it does not work on macOS and says they tried. Devices with integrated graphics also have bugs, so expect problems there too.
Do I need to install Veil separately?
No. Veil is already included in the mod. You do need Simple Voice Chat and GeckoLib, and you should not remove Veil's deferred resource pack once it is loaded.
