Nice Mobs

A set of new mobs that spawn naturally in fitting biomes and structures, each with its own quirks and abilities. Installs as a plain data pack or as a loader mod.

Nice Mobs is a data pack that adds a spread of vanilla-style mobs to Java, and it also ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It has to be installed where the world runs; players joining a multiplayer world can skip it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.21.4 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.21.5 require Nice Mobs Resource Pack.

Mobs worth finding

The creator's aim is mobs that feel like part of vanilla rather than a separate content layer.

  • Dirt Golem lives in the added Greenhouse structure, Sunflower Plains and Flower Forest. Give it saplings or small flowers and it plants them.
  • Tuff Golem waits in a jungle temple. Wool or moss carpet changes its clothing color.
  • Penguin roams snowy plains, ice spikes and frozen oceans, skates fast on ice, and pays back Raw Cod with an ice or snow item.
  • Bloomer is a Creeper variant that leaves a moss patch where it detonates instead of a crater.
  • Nautilus Crab comes in six beach variants and buries ocean items you can brush out. One find is the Nautilus Horn, which summons the Pufftail boss.
  • Cruncher lives in the Badlands, eats ore blocks and drops the ores again when you hit it.

The roster also includes the glowing Glare in Lush Caves, the mushroom-planting Mushling, the cheese-trading Rat and the Snail, which retreats into its shell near arthropods.

Two ways to install it

  1. 1.Mod route. Pick the file for your loader and release, drop it in the mods folder of your Java install directory, then launch with that loader's profile. The mod installation guide covers the steps.
  2. 2.Data pack route. Use the plain data pack build, which covers 1.21.4 to 1.21.11 and needs no mod loader.

Trade-offs

Nice Mobs reshapes the wildlife of many biomes at once, so it suits a world where you want a broader cast, not a single tweak. The side requirement is strict: the host needs it, while joining players do not. The project links source code on GitHub but no wiki or issue tracker, so the mob overview on its page is the main reference.

Questions about Nice Mobs.

3 questions

Is Nice Mobs a mod or a data pack?

Both. The mod route needs the loader that matches the file you pick.

Do players joining a world need Nice Mobs installed?

No. It is required on the side that runs the world, which means a single-player world or the host of a multiplayer one. Joining players can have it installed, but it is optional for them.

How do I summon the Pufftail in Nice Mobs?

Find a Nautilus Crab on a beach and brush the sand where it buries items until you uncover a Nautilus Horn. Playing the horn summons the Pufftail, a flying boss fish that drops a Riptide or Loyalty III Trident, or a Nautilus Helmet.
