| Environment | Client, Server |
No Caves is a world generation mod and datapack for Minecraft Java that removes caves from the Overworld. It ships as files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, plus a plain datapack for worlds that do not run a loader. It is required on the server and optional on the client.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric, Forge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.
Two ways to install
- Mod route: install the loader that matches your Minecraft release, put the mod file in the mods folder, and launch with that loader's profile. The guide on installing Java mods covers the steps.
- Datapack route: use the plain datapack that ships alongside the mod files.
Which caves it removes
The pack comes in three variants, so you can decide how much of the underground to keep.
- No Caves removes every cave.
- No Old Caves removes the old carver caves and leaves the 1.18+ noise caves.
- No New Caves removes the 1.18+ noise caves and leaves the classic carver caves.
Underground content still generates. Ancient Cities, Strongholds, Mineshafts, Amethyst Geodes, lava pools and ores remain. The packs also work with the Large Biomes and Amplified presets.
Compatibility with other worldgen packs
Compatibility with packs that add their own caves is handled manually, depending on how each one generates them. Sometimes it works automatically. Klinbee plans support for terrain packs such as Tectonic and Terralith. Until then, expect to test the combination yourself.
The trade-off is plain. This does one job, and it removes the cave systems that other worldgen packs may build on.
Questions about No Caves.
4 questions
Does No Caves work as a plain datapack?
Yes. Alongside the loader files, the project ships a plain datapack that does the same job, so you can use it in a world without Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt. The mod files are the route for people who already run a loader.
Can I remove only the new or only the old caves?
Yes. No Old Caves removes the classic carver caves and keeps the 1.18+ noise caves. No New Caves does the reverse. The main No Caves pack removes every cave type from the Overworld.
Does No Caves work with Terralith or Tectonic?
Not automatically in every case. Compatibility depends on how the other pack generates caves, and Klinbee plans support for both. When combining datapacks, No Caves must sit above the others in the list.
Do structures still generate without caves?
Yes. Ancient Cities, Strongholds, Mineshafts, Amethyst Geodes, lava pools and ores still generate. Only the caves themselves are removed.
