Shoulder Surfing Reloaded is a highly configurable third-person camera mod for Java, built for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. It moves the camera over your shoulder so you can see what you are interacting with. It runs on the player's side only, so multiplayer hosts install nothing.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.16 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.7.10 to 26.3. The newest build requires Forge Config API Port; some builds for 1.7.10 to 1.21 need no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.20.4 to 1.21 require Forge Config API Port.
What it changes
A decoupled camera lets you walk left and right without turning the mouse. Adaptive player transparency fades the model when the view is obstructed. Crosshair placement is corrected when you use an adaptive or dynamic crosshair.
- Free look on left alt keeps you walking in one direction while looking in another.
- Arrow keys, page up and page down move the camera, and o switches shoulders.
- A plugin API lets other mod developers add custom camera behaviours and compatibility features.
- Many options let you tune the third-person view to taste.
Installation
- 1.Install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, matching the release you play.
- 2.Add the libraries listed above for your loader, if any.
- 3.Place the mod file for that loader in the .minecraft/mods folder.
- 4.Pick the loader's profile in the launcher, start it and join a world. Use the camera keys to adjust the view.
Configuration and trade-offs
On 1.21 and newer, options live in-game under Mods, ShoulderSurfing, Config. Older releases need Forge Config Screens for the same screen. If the player does not face the crosshair while holding an item, adjust adaptive_crosshair_hold_items or adaptive_crosshair_use_items.
Questions about Shoulder Surfing Reloaded.
4 questions
Do I need to install Shoulder Surfing Reloaded on a multiplayer host?
No. The mod works on the player's side only, and no extra mods are needed on the host. It does change camera position and player movement, so a host with strict anti-cheat may object. Check the rules of the host before joining with it.
Why does the player look wrong with my shader pack?
The cause is the adaptive player transparency effect. Set adjust_player_transparency to off in the config and restart the game. If the problem remains, report it to the authors of the shader pack.
Why does the player not look at the crosshair when holding an item?
This needs to be configured with the config options adaptive_crosshair_hold_items or adaptive_crosshair_use_items. On 1.21 and newer, open the config in-game under Mods, ShoulderSurfing, Config. Older releases need Forge Config Screens to get the same in-game screen. Make the change in the config for the mod.
Can I add Shoulder Surfing Reloaded to a modpack?
Yes, the author allows it. The code is under the MIT License. The author does not port the mod to other loaders such as Quilt, and does not backport features to other releases.
