What Skylands over the Sea works with.
| Platform | Java Edition |
|---|---|
| Loaders | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt |
| Minecraft versions | 1.20, 1.20.6, 1.21.10 |
| Environment | Client, Server |
The Skylands over the Sea data pack rebuilds the overworld as floating islands above an endless ocean. It ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt and as a plain datapack, so a loader is optional. Every ocean biome generates below the islands, and caves and underground biomes sit beneath the water.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 1.21.10. The newest build needs no dependencies.
Dimension height and removal
Early releases altered the dimension height to give builders more room on the islands. The 3.0.0 line dropped that change.
Installation
- 1.Choose a route. For the mod, match the file to your loader, for example after you install Fabric. For no loader at all, take the plain datapack file.
- 2.For the mod, put the file in the mods folder, then launch with the loader's profile.
- 3.Install it wherever the world is generated, whether single-player or a dedicated host. Players who only join can leave it out.
Compatibility with other worldgen
Any mod that changes terrain will probably overwrite this one, or be overwritten by it. Mods that only add biomes should coexist. If bodies of water fail to generate, add the optional dependency Lithostitched, since the technique behind the islands clashes with surface builders. Some pairings may need dedicated compatibility packs, which are not yet made.
The Aetherial Islands Clusters add-on also works here, opening large gaps between island groups.
Questions about Skylands over the Sea.
3 questions
Can I use Skylands over the Sea as a data pack without a mod loader?
Yes. A plain datapack file is published alongside the loader files, and its newest release needs no dependencies. It covers 1.18.2 to 1.21.10, which reaches further back than the mod files. Use it when you do not run Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt.
Is it safe to remove Skylands over the Sea from a world?
Releases below 3.0.0 change the dimension height, and removing them corrupts worlds. From 3.0.0 on, that change is gone, so this particular cause no longer applies. Back up a world before adding or removing any worldgen pack.
Does Skylands over the Sea work with other terrain mods?
Mods that change terrain will probably overwrite one another, so only one should control the overworld shape. Biome-adding mods should be compatible. If water bodies fail to generate, installing the optional Lithostitched dependency is the suggested fix.
