SmartBrainLib is a Java mod library by Tslat that overhauls the brain system Mojang introduced for complex mobs. It runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and it is required on the server. Other mods use it to give their entities more capable AI.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API; builds for 1.18.2 to 1.21.1 need no dependencies.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.18.2 to 1.19.3, builds stopped after January 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What SmartBrainLib changes
Vanilla's brain system is cryptic and inefficient. SmartBrainLib replaces almost all of the brain's functions with higher-efficiency ones. Tslat's stated aim is that a well-built entity could run more cheaply than one using goals. The goals system still reads simpler at face value, so the brain approach suits more complex interactions.
- Memory types are handled automatically, so authors do not work out which memory modules to register.
- Sensors are configured dynamically, which allows more flexible detection.
- Behaviours build on an extensible class with callbacks, predicates and cooldowns.
- Behaviours can be added, removed and modified on an existing entity at runtime.
- Extra sensors, behaviours and memory types are included, plus optimised entity-getter functions and a Random library.
- A brain interface utility adds or removes brain content on entities that do not use SmartBrainLib.
Installation
Pick the loader your setup uses and match it to your Minecraft release. Put the mod's .jar in the mods folder, then launch with that loader's profile. The newest Fabric file needs Fabric API alongside it. If you are new to loaders, the guide on installing mods on Java Edition covers the steps.
Documentation and support
Usage is documented on the GitHub wiki, which is where mod authors learn the API. Bug reports and contributions go to the GitHub issue tracker. The mod has passed six million downloads on Modrinth since December 2022.
Questions about SmartBrainLib.
4 questions
What does SmartBrainLib do?
It is a library that overhauls Minecraft's brain system for mob AI, making it easier to configure and more efficient. It handles memory types, sensors and behaviours for mod authors. Players normally install it only because another mod depends on it.
Do I need SmartBrainLib on the server?
Yes. Modrinth lists the server side as required and the player side as unsupported. Put the .jar in the server's mods folder for your loader, along with any mod that depends on SmartBrainLib.
Does SmartBrainLib work on Quilt?
Only with older Minecraft releases. Quilt builds stopped after January 2023, while Fabric, Forge and NeoForge continue to receive updates. For a recent Minecraft release, choose one of those three loaders instead.
Does SmartBrainLib need Fabric API?
On Fabric, the newest build requires Fabric API, while older Fabric builds need no dependencies. The Forge and NeoForge builds need no dependencies. Check the file you pick against your Minecraft release before installing.
