Snow! Real Magic! is a Java mod for Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Forge that makes vanilla snow layers behave like a physical material. Snownee's snow real magic mod is not a magic mod despite the name. It is a tweak pack for snow, and it must be installed on both the multiplayer host and every player.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Kiwi 🥝, optionally Cloth Config API; some builds for 1.19.2 to 1.20.1 require Fabric API and Kiwi 🥝.
- NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.1.2. The newest build requires Kiwi 🥝, optionally Cloth Config API.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 1.20.1. The newest build requires Kiwi 🥝, optionally Cloth Config API.
What it changes
- Snow layers fall like sand, and falling snow that lands on a water source turns into ice.
- Layers pile up during thunderstorms or any snowfall, and snow can be set never to melt, to melt in warm biomes, or to fade over time.
- Snow and a fence, wall or tall grass can share one block. Slabs, stairs, walls, fences and fence gates get snow-covered variants that can also generate in the world.
- The collision box is thinner, as in Bedrock Edition, and deeper snow softens falls.
- Blocks can be placed straight into snow. A shovel, or sneaking with an empty hand, scrapes off a snowball and consumes one layer.
Every feature can be toggled in the config. A joke feature adds two game rules, `snowrealmagic:blizzardStrength` and `snowrealmagic:blizzardFrequency`, that make snow blocks drop from the sky.
Installing and customizing
Put the mod file and Kiwi in the mods folder of the matching loader. Fabric builds for older releases also need Fabric API. The install guide for Java mods covers the folder and profile steps.
Datapacks can extend the mod's block tags, such as `containables` and `not_containables`, to decide which blocks accept snow. KubeJS can edit those tags too. Resource packs can give a block its own snowy model with a `.json.mcmeta` file containing an `srm` section, provided the client config `snowVariants` stays enabled (it is by default).
The trade-off is the dependency chain and the two-sided install. A player without the mod and Kiwi cannot join a host that runs it.

Questions about Snow! Real Magic! ⛄.
4 questions
Does Snow! Real Magic! work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, but it is required on both sides. The host and every connecting player need the mod, plus Kiwi, built for the same loader. A player missing it will not be able to join a host that runs it.
Is Snow! Real Magic! a magic mod?
No. The name is a pun. It is a tweak mod that changes how snow layers fall, pile up, melt and cover other blocks, with no spells or magic items.
How do I remove Snow! Real Magic! safely?
Turn on the `snow-cover.restoreOriginalBlocks` config option before removing it. Snow-covered blocks are then restored to their original blocks as chunks load, so no modded blocks are left behind.
Which loaders does Snow! Real Magic! support?
It supports Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt and Forge. Forge builds stop at the 1.20.1 era, while Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt continue to the newest releases. Every loader needs Kiwi installed.
