Spyglass Astronomy

Draw your own constellations and name planets in a procedurally generated night sky, all through the lens of a spyglass. It is a Fabric mod that only the player using it needs to install.

Spyglass Astronomy is a Fabric mod that replaces the vanilla night sky with a procedurally generated solar system, with planets, better stars and constellations you draw yourself through a spyglass. It is built for world-building and immersion, and it runs on the player's own side only.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19 to 26.3. The newest build requires Fabric API, optionally Cosmos and Spyglass Astronomy Sync; some builds for 1.19 to 1.21.10 need no dependencies.

Using the spyglass

The spyglass gains three modes while you are zoomed in: vanilla, constellation (amethyst) and star (emerald). Cycle them with the pick block button, which is middle click by default. Planets and stars are generated per world and stay the same for every player in it, following largely accurate physics, so orbital resonance and alignments really happen. You spot them and write the lore.

  • Constellation mode: hold attack and draw between stars, or select an existing constellation.
  • Star mode: select stars and planets. Comets count as planets in commands.
  • /sga:name names the selected object, and /sga:info shows details about it.
  • /sga:share produces a code for the selected or a named object. Send it in chat so another player with the mod can add your constellation or name.

Compatibility

Cosmos can supply the star rendering and most of its customisation. Denser stars look better there, so raise the count with /sga:admin starCount. Anyone sharing the world must set the same value to stay in sync. For shaders, the mod's page points to Complementary with Euphoria Patches, which supports the colours of the stars and planets. Older releases clash with Spyglass Improvements, but the mod ships its own scrollable spyglass zoom.

Installation

Set up Fabric using the Fabric install guide, then place the mod and Fabric API in your mods folder. Spyglass Astronomy Sync is optional and smooths sharing, but it must also be present on the multiplayer host.

Questions about Spyglass Astronomy.

3 questions

Does Spyglass Astronomy work on multiplayer?

Yes, as a player-side mod. You install it yourself, and the stars and planets are identical for everyone in the same world. Your constellations and names stay private until you send a /sga:share code to another player who also has the mod. Spyglass Astronomy Sync makes this smoother but must be on the host too.

How do I draw a constellation with a spyglass?

Zoom in with the spyglass and press the pick block button (middle click) until you reach constellation mode, the amethyst one. Then hold the attack button (left click) and drag between stars. You can also select a constellation you already drew to inspect it or share it.

Does Spyglass Astronomy work with shaders?

Yes. The mod's page recommends Complementary with Euphoria Patches, which supports the colours of the stars and planets properly. Cosmos is another option if you want its star rendering and customisation alongside the mod.
