VillagerConfig is a villager config mod for Minecraft Java that rewrites how villagers and wandering traders trade. It runs on Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt and belongs on the server only. Trades load from datapacks, so pack makers and server owners can reshape them without touching code.
What it changes
Custom trades are the core feature. A datapack can replace wandering trader and villager trades entirely, and DrexHD's wiki documents the format. An online generator gives you a graphical form with an instant preview for building the datapack files.
Beyond trades, the config covers several villager behaviours.
- Discounts, with a configurable maximum and minimum a villager can apply.
- Trade cycling, which decides whether trades change when the workstation is replaced before anyone has traded.
- Conversion chance, the odds that a villager turns into a zombie villager.
- Infinite trades, which decides whether villagers need to restock.
Testing your trades
Two commands save a lot of guesswork. `/vc test villager` opens a randomly generated trade window for a given profession, and you can add the level to unlock. `/vc test wanderingtrader` does the same for wandering traders. Use them to check a datapack before players see it.
Installation
Drop the mod file into the mods folder of the server, using the loader that matches your Minecraft release (see how to install Java mods if you are new to it). Fabric and Quilt releases cover 1.18.2 to 26.3. NeoForge covers 1.21 to 26.3. The newest release, 4.6.0 for 26.3, requires no other mod.
Older files differ. The Fabric and Quilt file for 1.19 requires Fabric API. The 1.21 file requires Fabric API and one other Modrinth project, and the file for 1.20.5 to 1.20.6 requires that same Modrinth project.
Questions about VillagerConfig.
4 questions
Do players need to install VillagerConfig?
No. The mod is required on the server and unsupported on the client, so only the server owner installs it. Players join as usual and see the customised trades in the normal villager and wandering trader windows.
Which Minecraft versions does VillagerConfig support?
Fabric and Quilt releases span 1.18.2 to 26.3, and NeoForge spans 1.21 to 26.3. Dependencies vary for a few older files, but the newest release for 26.3 needs no other mod.
How do I test custom villager trades?
Run `/vc test villager` with a profession, and optionally a level, to open a randomly generated trade window. Run `/vc test wanderingtrader` for wandering traders. This lets you check a datapack without hunting for a villager.
Can I change how often villagers turn into zombies?
Yes. The config has a conversion chance option that sets how likely a villager is to become a zombie villager. The same config also controls discounts, trade cycling and whether villagers need to restock.
