VillEdit

VillEdit is a datapack and mod set for building custom villagers through an in-world menu. Set trades, profession, biome, level and name, then take home a spawn egg.

VillEdit is a villager creator for Minecraft Java. The VillEdit datapack needs no mod loader, and matching mod files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It must be present on the host of a world, while players who join do not need it.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.17 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What you can edit

You shape a villager through a chest-and-barrel menu instead of commands. Every button explains itself on hover. Appearance options cover the following.

  • Cycle profession, biome and level
  • Toggle static (NoAI), glow and silent
  • Change the custom name

Trades have their own menu. Place items into the slots to define them. Each trade needs at least one input and one output, and you can choose whether it rewards XP. The redstone button removes the last trade, and pressing the redstone block twice clears them all.

How to install and use it

  1. 1.Pick a route. Put the mod file for your loader in the mods folder (see how to install mods on Java, or set up Fabric first), or use the plain datapack, which needs no mod loader.
  2. 2.Place a chest, then sneak and right-click its top with a villager spawn egg. This spawns a Villager Editor.
  3. 3.Right-click the barrel, adjust appearance, and add trades.
  4. 4.Press Save to receive a spawn egg holding your villager. Break the editor when you are finished with it.

Trade-offs

The project links no source code or issue tracker, so there is no repository licence to check. The idea came from a CommandGeek video, which is embedded below.

Questions about VillEdit.

4 questions

Does VillEdit need a mod loader?

No. The datapack works without mods, so a plain world is enough. Mod files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt are also published if you prefer to install it through your loader. Either route gives you the same villager editor.

How do I spawn the VillEdit editor?

Place a chest, then sneak and right-click the top of it with a villager spawn egg. That spawns a Villager Editor. Right-click the barrel to open the menu, adjust the villager, add trades, and press Save to get your spawn egg.

Do custom villagers still work if I remove the datapack?

Yes. The spawn egg you receive on saving keeps working even after the datapack is uninstalled. Hover over the egg in your inventory and its lore lists the villager's data, so you can check what it holds.

Do players need VillEdit to join a multiplayer world?

It is required on the host side, and optional for players who join. Once you save, the editor gives you a spawn egg, and that egg keeps working even if the datapack is later uninstalled. Hover over the egg in your inventory to see the villager's data in its lore.
