Chunky Border turns a Chunky pre-generation boundary into an enforced world border, with configurable teleport wrapping and live map rendering on top. It runs on Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, and Folia, plus separate Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge builds, and it has no pre-generation or selection commands of its own. It needs Chunky already installed and working on the same server, since every border is built from Chunky's own selection and shape commands.

The plugin is maintained by pop4959, the same developer behind Chunky, and distributed under the GPL-3.0-only license.

Installing Chunky Border

  1. 1.Install Chunky first and confirm pre-generation works on the server or client you plan to use.
  2. 2.Download the matching Chunky Border build from Modrinth: Bukkit family for Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, or Folia, or Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge for those mod loaders.
  3. 3.On Fabric, also install Fabric API alongside it.
  4. 4.Place the file in the plugins folder (Bukkit family) or the mods folder (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge).
  5. 5.Restart the server.

Setting and managing a border

Select a region the same way you would for pre-generation, then run chunky border add instead of chunky start. A simple example that adds a 5000 block radius border around the current selection is chunky radius 5000, followed by chunky border add.

  • chunky border add [world] - creates a world border from the current selection.
  • chunky border remove [world] - removes the border from a world.
  • chunky border list - lists every active border.
  • chunky border load [world] - loads a world's existing border back into your selection.
  • chunky border bypass [player] - temporarily lets a player ignore the border.
  • chunky border wrap [type] - sets teleport wrapping across the border to default, both, radial, x, z, or earth, or disables it with no type.

Wrap mode changes what happens when a player reaches the line instead of just stopping them there. The earth option wraps travel across the border the way longitude wraps around a globe, so a player crossing one edge reappears near the opposite one instead of hitting a wall. Every border command sits behind a single permission node, chunky.command.border, so any Bukkit-compatible permissions setup can grant or restrict it.

Configuration and map integrations

The config.yml file controls how the border behaves and how it looks. Border options include the check interval, a chat or action bar message shown to players who cross it, a sound and particle effect on contact, an optional particle visualizer players see as they approach, and toggles to block mob spawns, ender pearls, and chorus fruit teleports past the line.

The same file also enables map rendering for BlueMap, Dynmap, Pl3xMap, and Squaremap, each with its own label, color, and line weight, so the border shows up as a visible outline on any of those web maps without extra setup.

Supported server software and Minecraft versions

Modrinth lists two separate build tracks that have not moved in step. The Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, and Folia build is at version 1.2.23, published November 5, 2024, and its declared Minecraft compatibility currently reaches 26.2, the newest quarterly release. The Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge build is one version ahead at 1.2.24, published December 8, 2024, but it is capped at Minecraft 1.21.4 and has had no newer upload since. Anyone running Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge on a release past 1.21.4 should confirm compatibility before relying on it; the server-software builds are the actively current track.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Chunky Border.

5 questions

How do I install Chunky Border on a Paper or Spigot server?

Install Chunky first and confirm it can pre-generate chunks on your server. Then download the Bukkit family build of Chunky Border from Modrinth and drop it in the plugins folder alongside Chunky. Restart the server, select a region with Chunky's own commands, and run chunky border add to enforce it.

Does Chunky Border work with Fabric?

Yes, a separate Fabric build exists and also needs Fabric API installed alongside it. That build is capped at Minecraft 1.21.4 as of its last update in December 2024, while the Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, and Folia build has kept pace with newer Minecraft releases. Check the current version list before relying on the Fabric build on a newer release.

Why use a world border with Chunky pre-generation?

Chunky pre-generates every chunk inside a chosen area so players never trigger real-time generation lag there. Without a hard limit, players can still walk past that area and force new chunks to generate anyway, which brings back the exact lag pre-generation was meant to avoid. Chunky Border stops movement, teleports, and mob spawns past the line, so the pre-generated area stays the real edge of the playable world.

Does Chunky Border need a permissions plugin?

No. Every border command sits behind a single permission node, chunky.command.border, which works with Bukkit's built-in operator permissions or any permissions plugin you already run. A dedicated permissions plugin is only useful if you want to hand border management to specific staff roles rather than server operators.

Is Chunky Border safe to use on a multiplayer server?

Chunky Border is open source under GPL-3.0-only and distributed through Modrinth by pop4959, who also maintains Chunky. It only controls movement, teleports, and mob spawns beyond a line you define, and does not touch existing terrain or world files, so testing it on a copy of your world before rolling it out is a reasonable precaution like with any server plugin.
