LevelledMobs is a levelling plugin for Paper, Spigot, Purpur and Folia servers, built by PenalBuffalo, UltimaOath and lokka30. It gives mobs levels and upgrades them to match, adding an RPG-style challenge without changing the vanilla feel. It is server-side only, so players join with a normal client.

Server software and versions

  • Paper, Purpur and Spigot: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Folia: Minecraft 1.19.2 to 26.1.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.

How mobs get their levels

You combine any number of levelling strategies and modifiers. The plugin supports these approaches:

  • Distance from the world origin.
  • Y-coordinate, so deeper or higher mobs differ.
  • Random and weighted random levels.
  • A player variable, with PlaceholderAPI supported.

Because it leans almost entirely on vanilla features and mechanics, it stays flexible with other plugins. An externalplugins.yml file gives you the means to identify any third-party plugin using the most commonly used methods.

Installation and configuration

Drop the plugin file into the plugins folder and restart, as described in our plugin install guide. The default configuration has been tuned over several years to suit most servers, so it works out of the box. The plugin needs Java 21 or newer.

About 85% of the system runs from a single rules.yml file, and four other files handle the rest. A wiki covers setup from beginner to advanced, and a support Discord has been active for years.

Custom drops and item support

A custom drops system can be applied in several ways. The most flexible is a drop table set up through a custom rule. Items from several third-party item-generator plugins are handled by the addon LM_Items, published by ArcanePlugins.

Questions about LevelledMobs.

5 questions

How do I install LevelledMobs?

Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of a Paper, Spigot, Purpur or Folia server running Java 21 or newer, then restart. The default configuration works without changes, so it starts levelling mobs straight away. Players need nothing installed on their side.

Does LevelledMobs work on Folia?

Yes, Folia has its own builds of LevelledMobs. Its newest build is older than the newest Paper, Purpur and Spigot builds, and it covers a slightly narrower range of Minecraft releases. Check the versions list on this page before choosing.

Does LevelledMobs need PlaceholderAPI?

No. The newest builds for every listed server software require no dependencies. The player variable levelling strategy is PlaceholderAPI supported, so you can use placeholders there, but nothing needs to be installed alongside LevelledMobs for it to start working with its default configuration.

How do I configure LevelledMobs?

Most of the system, about 85%, is controlled from the rules.yml file, with four other files covering the rest. The externalplugins.yml file helps identify mobs from other plugins. A detailed wiki explains each option for beginners and advanced admins.

Do players need to install LevelledMobs?

No. It is a server plugin, so only the server needs it. Players join with a normal client, and the levelled mobs appear to them without any extra download.
