Waypoints is a server-side plugin for Paper and Folia that turns homesick players loose on foot instead of teleporting them home outright. Direction indicators such as beacons, compasses, and floating text guide players toward saved locations, keeping survival travel meaningful.
Server software and versions
- Folia: Minecraft 1.19.4 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Pl3xMap, squaremap, Dynmap® and BlueMap; some builds for 1.20.1 to 1.20.6 require CommandAPI.
- Paper: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally Pl3xMap, squaremap, Dynmap® and BlueMap; some builds for 1.20.1 to 1.20.6 require CommandAPI.
- Spigot: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 1.20.2, builds stopped after October 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally squaremap, Dynmap® and BlueMap.
Direction indicators
Waypoints ships seven indicator types that can be combined so players always have a way to tell which direction to walk.
- Bossbar compass highlighting the direction toward the waypoint
- Beacon beam that appears once the waypoint enters render distance
- Floating hologram text marking the waypoint location
- Blinking block sequence for pinpointing the exact spot up close
- Physical compass item that points at the destination
- Actionbar indicator showing rough direction without needing a compass
- Directional particles at the player's feet
Player tracking and customization
Player tracking is disabled by default; turning it on adds a menu for locking onto another player's location, with opt-in visibility and a notification sent to whoever gets tracked. Admins can cap how many waypoints or folders each player keeps, set custom icons per waypoint or folder, and charge escalating teleport costs through Vault. Seven languages ship out of the box, and the plugin is fully translatable beyond that.
Commands and permissions
Every feature is exposed through the waypoints command tree, gated behind granular permission nodes so admins decide who can create, view, or manage waypoints.
- waypoints opens the management interface
- waypoints set creates a private waypoint, setPublic makes it visible to everyone
- waypoints teleport moves a player to a saved location
- waypoints other views another player's waypoints
- waypoints reload reloads the configuration, a full reload of the running instance is not supported
Compatibility
Public waypoints can surface on Dynmap, squaremap, Pl3xMap, and BlueMap when those map plugins are installed, though none of them are required to run Waypoints. Data lives in a local SQLite file, so no external database is needed. Spigot builds stopped after October 2023, leaving Paper and Folia as the only actively maintained targets, and setup follows the same steps as any other plugin.
Questions about Waypoints.
4 questions
Does Waypoints work on Folia?
Yes. Folia is a fully supported target alongside Paper. The newest release needs no extra dependencies and can optionally publish waypoints to map plugins like Dynmap, squaremap, Pl3xMap, or BlueMap when those are installed.
Do I need a permissions plugin to use Waypoints?
No. Waypoints defines its own permission nodes, such as waypoints.command.use for opening the menu and waypoints.modify.private for creating personal waypoints, and these work with any standard permissions setup. No dedicated permissions plugin ships alongside it or is required to run it.
Why does Waypoints need CommandAPI on some versions?
Only a middle range of builds targeting Minecraft 1.20.1 to 1.20.6 on Paper and Folia require CommandAPI. The newest release for both loaders needs no external dependencies, and older builds for earlier versions also run without it.
Is Waypoints still updated for Spigot?
No. Spigot builds stopped after version 3.6.6 in October 2023, while Paper and Folia builds have continued receiving updates. Anyone running Spigot for Waypoints is stuck on an older version range with no further fixes coming.
