Clear Lava and Water is a 16x tweak resource pack for Java that deletes the lava and water overlay, so everything beneath the surface stays visible. It works on vanilla and with Sodium, and it applies only to the player's own install.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.17 to 26.3. The newest build optionally uses Sodium.
What changes visually
The pack changes one file, fog.glsl, which carries the lava and water overlay.
- Resolution: 16x.
- Imported from the Vanilla Tweaks packs. WhiterM edited the newer variant by combining the tweak with the vanilla 1.20.5 file.
- Makushimu0 worked out how to make the pack compatible with Sodium.
- OptiFine is not required.
How to install Clear Lava and Water
- 1.Put the .zip in the resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder).
- 2.Move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
- 3.To use Sodium below 26.2, also install the Sodium Core Shader Support mod. It has no release for 1.20.3 and below, or for NeoForge 1.21.9 and higher. From 26.2, Sodium handles shader changes itself. The same pack file works with and without Sodium.
- 4.If only a few chunks show under lava or water, turn off Use Fog Occlusion in Options > Video Settings > Performance.
Known limitations
The pack is a single-purpose tweak. A mismatched pack format can still load but shows an incompatibility warning.
Questions about Clear Lava and Water.
4 questions
Does Clear Lava and Water work with Sodium?
Yes. The same pack file works on vanilla and with Sodium, so you do not need a separate copy. Older Sodium setups also need the Sodium Core Shader Support mod, while the newest Sodium handles shader changes itself. Rubidium on Forge is not supported.
Does Clear Lava and Water need OptiFine?
No. The pack does not require OptiFine. Shader packs do not support it, apart from Sodium. For setups the pack does not support, the creator points to the separate Lava Clear View mod.
Why do I only see a few chunks under lava or water?
If you see only a few chunks under lava or water with the pack active, open Options, then Video Settings, then Performance, and disable Use Fog Occlusion. The pack's own fix for this is that single setting change. The option is named Use Fog Occlusion, and the creator lists it as the fix for this symptom.
Does Clear Lava and Water work on Bedrock?
No. This is a Java pack that edits a shader file, and Bedrock uses a different format. Bedrock players need a pack made for that edition.
