Default Dark Mode

Default Dark Mode is a client-side dark GUI and dark UI resource pack for Minecraft Java Edition. It turns menus, the inventory, and the HUD near-black, extends the same dark theme to 80+ popular modded interfaces, and leaves block and entity textures untouched so it stacks with any other pack.

Default Dark Mode title screen with dark background and menu buttons

Default Dark Mode is a client-side dark GUI and dark UI resource pack for Minecraft Java Edition. It restyles every menu, inventory screen, container, and HUD element in a near-black dark theme, including dark inventory, dark crafting, and dark chest interfaces, while leaving block and entity textures exactly as vanilla so it stacks cleanly on top of any other resource pack.

What changes visually

Every Minecraft interface panel switches to a dark gray-to-black palette, giving Java Edition a genuine black GUI look in place of the default vanilla white and gray theme. The main menu, pause screen, and all in-game container GUIs (inventory, crafting table, chest, furnace, anvil, enchanting table, and more) receive the dark treatment. The hotbar background and HUD elements are restyled as well, so the dark theme carries through the inventory, hotbar, and every on-screen menu consistently.

The loading screen dark theme requires OptiFine. Without OptiFine, every other dark menu, dark inventory, and dark GUI change in the pack works exactly as expected, and only the loading screen stays at its default vanilla appearance.

  • Main menu and pause screen
  • Player inventory
  • Crafting table, furnace, blast furnace, smoker
  • Chest and barrel containers
  • Anvil, enchanting table, grindstone, smithing table
  • Hotbar and HUD elements
  • Title screen background
  • Loading screen (OptiFine required)

How to install Default Dark Mode

  1. 1.Download the .zip from the Modrinth project page.
  2. 2.Open Minecraft, go to Options, then Resource Packs.
  3. 3.Click Open Pack Folder, then drag the .zip into that folder.
  4. 4.Back in Minecraft, move Default Dark Mode to the Selected column and click Done.
  5. 5.If you also use a block or entity texture pack, place Default Dark Mode above it in the selected list so the GUI textures take priority.

Compatibility and load order

Default Dark Mode is a client-only pack with no server-side requirement, so the dark UI theme works the same in singleplayer and on a multiplayer server: only your own client needs the resource pack installed. It works with any mod loader or no loader at all, since Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, and vanilla all use the same built-in resource pack screen to load it.

Because the pack only touches GUI textures, it is fully compatible with shaders and with other resource packs. Shader pipelines render world geometry and do not override inventory panels, so the dark theme remains intact regardless of which shader you use, and stacking Default Dark Mode above a block or entity texture pack keeps its dark GUI on top without conflicts. It is also compatible with Sodium, Iris, and other optimization mods without any extra configuration.

Dark theming for modded GUIs

Default Dark Mode does not stop at vanilla menus. Its creator maintains a compatibility list covering 80 or more popular Fabric and Forge mods, extending the same dark theme to their inventory screens and interface panels, including Just Enough Items, Applied Energistics 2, Farmer's Delight, Iron Chests, and Adorn. Support varies by mod and loader version, so check the project's compatibility list on Modrinth before assuming coverage for a specific mod.

Questions about Default Dark Mode.

6 questions

How do I install Default Dark Mode?

Download the .zip from Modrinth, open Minecraft, and go to Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder. Drop the .zip into that folder, return to the resource pack screen, and move Default Dark Mode to the Selected column. If you stack it with other packs, place it above them so its GUI textures are not overridden.

Does Default Dark Mode need OptiFine or a mod?

No mod or loader is required. Default Dark Mode works as a standalone resource pack, and every dark menu, dark inventory, and dark GUI screen loads without OptiFine. The one exception is the dark loading screen, which needs OptiFine specifically; everything else works the same with or without it.

Is Default Dark Mode available for Bedrock Edition?

No. Default Dark Mode is built for Java Edition only, using the Java resource pack format for its dark GUI and dark UI theme. Bedrock Edition uses a separate add-on and texture system, so there is no Bedrock version of this pack.

Which Minecraft version does Default Dark Mode support?

Default Dark Mode supports Java Edition from 1.16.5 through the current 26.2 release, and its creator has kept it updated through each major and year.drop update, including 26.1 and 26.1.1. Download the version that matches your game from the project's Modrinth page.

Does Default Dark Mode work with shaders?

Yes. Shaders control world rendering and do not override GUI panel textures, so the dark theme on menus, the inventory, and the HUD stays visible no matter which shader pack is active. No extra configuration is needed.

Does Default Dark Mode theme modded GUIs too?

Yes, for many popular mods. Its creator maintains a compatibility list of 80 or more Fabric and Forge mods, including Just Enough Items, Applied Energistics 2, and Farmer's Delight, whose interface panels also get the dark GUI treatment. Coverage depends on the specific mod and version, so check the project's compatibility list before relying on it for a less common mod.
