Excalibur is a 16x medieval resource pack for Java Edition, made by Maffhew. It keeps the default resolution and its familiar charm, then turns villages and kingdoms into something closer to a fantasy storybook.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 1.3.2 to 26.3.

What changes visually

The pack replaces all textures rather than a select few, so nothing stays out of place beside your castle walls.

  • Random, alternate block variation, which breaks up repeating patterns on large surfaces.
  • 3D block models and improvements.
  • A custom font.
  • Random mobs, so creatures of the same type can look different.
  • Animated textures, as listed in its CurseForge categories.

How to install Excalibur

Download the .zip from the CurseForge page and place it in the resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder). Then move it to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen. Our guide to installing resource packs covers both editions step by step. Loading it on a different game release than the one it targets still works but shows an incompatibility warning.

The pack lists no required mods or companion tools, so no OptiFine or similar add-on is needed to load it.

Known limitations

This listing covers Java Edition only. A separate Bedrock Edition release exists, in a different format. The 16x resolution also means fine detail stays modest compared with high-resolution packs.

Questions about Excalibur.

3 questions

How do I install the Excalibur resource pack?

Download the .zip from CurseForge and put it in the resourcepacks folder, which you can open from Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder. Back on the Resource Packs screen, move Excalibur to the Selected side. A pack made for another game release can still load, but it shows an incompatibility warning.

Is Excalibur available for Bedrock Edition?

The creator states Excalibur can also be found on Bedrock Edition, but that is a separate release in a different format. The CurseForge listing covered here is Java Edition only, so a Java pack file will not work on Bedrock.

Can I use Excalibur in my videos or change the pack?

Videos are allowed, including monetized and commercial ones. Altering or building on the pack is not allowed, nor is commercial use of the pack itself or redistributing it without a link back, unless Matthew (Maffhew) Dillow grants permission.
