Bare Bones is a 16x resource pack for Java Edition that replaces Minecraft's default textures with the clean, flat style used in Mojang's promotional trailers and box art. Every block, item, and entity is redrawn with bolder outlines, reduced surface noise, and a more saturated palette that makes the world read clearly at any distance. Maintained by RobotPants since version 1.6, the latest release targets Minecraft 1.21.11.

What Changes Visually

The pack retouches nearly every block and entity texture. Terrain reads more clearly at a distance: grass, stone, and sand lose the fine-grain noise that ships in vanilla, replaced with clean washes of color. Nether and End biomes follow the same logic, so Crimson Forest and End City screenshots look deliberately composed rather than procedural. Items and mob skins carry the same treatment, giving the inventory and entity close-ups a consistent illustrated look throughout.

  • 16x resolution, same as vanilla, loads without extra hardware overhead
  • Covers all Overworld, Nether, and End blocks plus entity textures
  • No OptiFine, CIT, or CTM required
  • Single ZIP download, approximately 5 MB
  • Continuously updated since Minecraft 1.6

How to Install Bare Bones

  1. 1.Open Minecraft Java Edition and go to Options > Resource Packs.
  2. 2.Click Open Pack Folder to locate the resourcepacks directory.
  3. 3.Download Bare Bones from the Modrinth page and drop the ZIP into that folder.
  4. 4.Back in the game, select Bare Bones from the available column and move it to the active column.
  5. 5.Click Done. The pack activates immediately on the next screen or world load.

Compatibility with Shaders

Because Bare Bones stays at 16x and does not use OptiFine-specific features, it pairs cleanly with most Java shader packs. The simpler base textures can make shader lighting more readable: block shadows fall on flatter surfaces and highlights sit on cleaner geometry. No additional configuration is needed beyond enabling the pack and a compatible shader in the video settings.

Questions about this entry.

  • How do I install Bare Bones?

Download the ZIP from the Modrinth page, drop it into your .minecraft/resourcepacks folder, then enable it from Options > Resource Packs in-game. No mod loader or OptiFine needed.

  • Does Bare Bones work with shaders?

Yes. Bare Bones does not rely on OptiFine or custom models, so it pairs cleanly with most Java shader packs including BSL, Complementary, and Rethinking Voxels. The simpler textures can make shader lighting more prominent.

  • Is Bare Bones available for Bedrock Edition?

The Modrinth distribution is for Java Edition. No Bedrock port is available on this page. Bedrock players may find unofficial community adaptations, but those are not affiliated with RobotPants.

  • Which Minecraft version does Bare Bones support?

Bare Bones has been maintained since 1.6 and the current release targets Minecraft 1.21.11. Older version files are archived on the Modrinth page.

  • Does Bare Bones need OptiFine?

No. Bare Bones is a standard ZIP pack that loads through vanilla Minecraft. You do not need Fabric, Forge, OptiFine, or any other tooling.
