Light Levels is a light levels resource pack for Java that tints the world by brightness, so you can see where mobs can still spawn. It colors levels 0, 7 and 11 through custom lightmaps and works with Polytone or OptiFine. It is purely visual and applies on the player's side only.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.19.3 to 26.3. The newest build optionally uses Polytone; builds for 1.19.3 to 1.19.4 require Colormatic.
What changes visually
Levels 0, 7 and 11 each get a distinct color through custom lightmaps, so you can see where a light source still has to go to stop mob spawning.
Settings for OptiFine
Under OptiFine the pack requires three settings.
- Custom Colors set to ON
- Smooth Lighting set to OFF
- Dynamic Lights set to OFF
How to install Light Levels
- 1.Place the pack's .zip in the resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder).
- 2.Move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
- 3.On OptiFine, apply the three settings above.
New to packs? The install guide covers the folder steps in detail. A pack made for another release can still load but shows an incompatibility warning.
Questions about Light Levels.
3 questions
Does the Light Levels resource pack work with Polytone?
From 1.21.10 onward Polytone does not support them yet, so the pack may only work with OptiFine there. The newest build lists Polytone as optional and requires nothing else.
Which OptiFine settings does Light Levels need?
Turn Custom Colors on, Smooth Lighting off and Dynamic Lights off. The pack colors light levels 0, 7 and 11 with custom lightmaps, and it lists these three settings as requirements when it runs under OptiFine. Set all three together when you use OptiFine.
Is Light Levels available for Bedrock or console?
No. It is a Java pack that relies on custom lightmaps through Polytone or OptiFine, so it does not apply to Bedrock or console play.
