Night Vision is a tiny Java Edition resource pack by Luracasmus that brightens caves, oceans, and other dark spaces without granting the actual Night Vision status effect. It works through custom lightmaps and, on newer versions, a modified environment attribute, read by either the Polytone mod or OptiFine. The pack ships no new textures of its own: it only changes how existing lighting renders on screen.

What Night Vision changes in Minecraft

Vanilla Minecraft darkens the screen sharply at low light levels, which is the whole point of caving and surviving at night. Night Vision overrides the client's lightmap so those same low-light levels render noticeably brighter, similar to running a permanent Night Vision potion but without touching game mechanics like mob spawning, potion duration, or the status effect icon. Because the change lives in the resource pack layer, it only affects what you see. Other players, mob AI, and light-level-based spawning behave exactly as they do without the pack.

How to install Night Vision

Night Vision needs either Polytone or OptiFine to read its custom lightmap data; the base game ignores it on its own. Pick whichever companion tool already fits your setup.

  1. 1.Download the pack zip from Night Vision's Modrinth page.
  2. 2.With Polytone installed as a Fabric mod, drop the zip into your resource packs folder and enable it from the in-game Resource Packs menu, like any other pack.
  3. 3.With OptiFine instead, enable the pack the same way, then set Custom Colors to On, Smooth Lighting to Off, and Dynamic Lights to Off in OptiFine's video settings.

Version support and the Polytone vs OptiFine split

Luracasmus lists support across Minecraft 1.19.3 through 26.2, but which companion tool works depends on the version. Below 1.21.10, both Polytone and OptiFine can run the pack through its custom lightmaps. Polytone dropped custom lightmap support starting at 1.21.10, and the newer environment-attribute method the pack also uses does not exist before 26.1, which leaves a documented gap where only OptiFine is confirmed to work.

  • 1.19.3 through 1.21.9: works with Polytone or OptiFine through custom lightmaps.
  • 1.21.10 and 1.21.11: OptiFine only, per the creator's documentation; Polytone's lightmap support does not cover this range.
  • 26.1 and later: the pack adds a modified environment attribute alongside its lightmap approach.

Night Vision Universal is a different Bedrock pack

Searching for this pack's name also surfaces Night Vision Universal, a Bedrock Edition texture pack from a different creator, listed separately on CurseForge and MCPEDL. It shares no code or authorship with Luracasmus's project. Night Vision, the resource pack covered on this page, is Java Edition only and needs Polytone or OptiFine to work; it has no Bedrock counterpart. Players who want an alternative that needs neither companion tool can also look at the similarly small Fullbright UB.

Questions about Night Vision.

5 questions

Does Night Vision give the actual Night Vision potion effect?

No. It only changes the game's lightmap and, on Minecraft 26.1 and later, an environment attribute, so dark areas render brighter on screen. It does not grant the Night Vision status effect, does not remove darkness-based mob spawning, and works purely through the client's resource pack renderer.

Do I need OptiFine or Polytone to use Night Vision?

Yes, one of the two. Night Vision relies on custom lightmap and environment-attribute support that vanilla Java Edition does not read on its own. Install either the Polytone mod or OptiFine, then enable the resource pack from the in-game pack menu.

Which Minecraft versions does Night Vision support?

The pack lists Minecraft 1.19.3 through 26.2. Coverage depends on your companion tool: Polytone's custom lightmap support stops before 1.21.10, and the newer environment-attribute method only exists from 26.1 onward, so OptiFine is the documented option for the 1.21.10 and 1.21.11 gap in between.

Is this the same pack as Night Vision Universal on Bedrock?

No. Night Vision by Luracasmus is a Java Edition resource pack that needs Polytone or OptiFine. Night Vision Universal is a separate, unrelated Bedrock texture pack from a different creator, listed on CurseForge and MCPEDL. The names are similar, but the two projects share no code, files, or authorship.

Where can I download Night Vision?

Download it from its Modrinth project page, where Luracasmus publishes updates and lists the current file. MinecraftHub links out to that page rather than hosting the file directly.
