What No Light — No Color! works with.
| Platform | Java Edition |
|---|---|
| Minecraft versions | 1.17, 1.17.1, 1.18.2, 1.19.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.11 |
The No Light No Color resource pack makes blocks lose their color smoothly as block light decreases. Torch-lit bases stay vivid, while dark caves and unlit corners fade to grayscale. It is a Java-only pack that runs on the client, and it needs no OptiFine.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.17 to 1.21.11.
- Minecraft 1.20.2 to 1.21.5, builds stopped after September 2024.
What changes visually
The effect follows block light only. Sky light does not affect it. The shift is gradual, not a hard cutoff.
The pack covers most blocks. Entities, some block entities and particles use a different lighting method and keep their normal colors. The creator says he may try to cover entities and block entities later.
Compatibility and trade-offs
The pack works with the LambDynamicLights mod.
How to install and adjust it
- 1.Put the .zip in your resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder).
- 2.Move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
- 3.If a pack format warning appears, the pack can still load. See the install guide for the full steps.
To tune the effect, open the pack and edit assets/minecraft/shaders/include/no_light_no_color.glsl. The numbers in the first two lines control the radius and smoothness of the color fade. The creator warns the variables are not intuitive, so change them in small steps until the look suits you.
Questions about No Light — No Color!.
5 questions
Does No Light No Color work with Sodium?
No. The creator states plainly that the pack does not work with Sodium. It does not need OptiFine, though it works with it, and it also works with the LambDynamicLights mod.
Does the pack change entities and particles?
No. It affects most blocks only. Entities, some block entities, particles and similar elements use a different lighting method, so they keep their normal colors. The creator has said he may try to extend it to entities and block entities later.
Does sky light affect the grayscale effect?
No. Only block light drives the color fade, so daylight does not restore color on its own. Color fades gradually as block light drops, and sky light plays no part in it.
Is No Light No Color available for Bedrock?
No. It is a Java Edition resource pack and runs on the client. Bedrock uses a different pack format, so this one will not load there.
Can I change how far the color fade reaches?
Yes. Open assets/minecraft/shaders/include/no_light_no_color.glsl inside the pack and edit the numbers in the first two lines. They set the radius and smoothness of the fade, and small changes until the look suits you are the safest approach.
