Chippa256 shader

A bare-bones OptiFine shader that gives Minecraft Java a pixelated, dithered, 256-color retro screen. It leans cartoon and cursed while staying close to vanilla.

Chippa256 shader is a retro low-fi shader pack for Minecraft Java that pushes the already blocky look toward a 256-color, low-resolution screen. It is built for OptiFine and runs only on the player's own machine, so it changes what you see and nothing for other players. Modrinth tags the style as cartoon, cursed and vanilla-like.

Shader loaders and versions

  • OptiFine: Minecraft 1.0 to 1.21.10.

What it changes

The pack applies dithering and other vintage screen effects, plus pixelation options that make the picture look lower in resolution than it is. Modrinth also tags it atmosphere and colored-lighting, and files it under the low and potato performance categories. Read that as positioning, not a hardware promise.

Installation

  1. 1.Install OptiFine for your Minecraft release.

The shader install guide walks through the folders in detail. If the pack does not appear in the menu, fixing shaders that will not load covers the usual causes.

Trade-offs

This is a narrow pack. The creator calls it very basic and says there is not much to say about it for now. OptiFine is the only listed loader, and the single release, 0.3, was published on 2025-10-27. If you want a deliberate 256-color throwback, that is exactly what it offers.

Questions about Chippa256 shader.

4 questions

How do I install the Chippa256 shader?

Install OptiFine for your Minecraft release, then place the pack's .zip in the shaderpacks folder. Shaders run on the player's own machine, so nothing needs installing anywhere else.

Does the Chippa256 shader work with Iris?

The pack lists OptiFine as its only loader, and its README describes it as running on OptiFine. Iris is not listed for it, so use OptiFine. Bedrock cannot run either loader, so the pack is Java only. If it does not appear in the menu, recheck the shaderpacks folder.

Is the Chippa256 shader light enough for low-end PCs?

Modrinth files the pack under its low and potato performance categories, which positions it as light. The creator publishes no frame rate figures, so treat that as a rough guide rather than a promise. Pixelation and dithering are screen effects, and results still depend on your hardware.

What does the Chippa256 shader look like?

It applies dithering and other vintage screen effects to create a retro 256-color look, with pixelation options for a lower apparent resolution. It is a very basic but effective shader that makes the low-res feel of Minecraft seem even more low-res. Modrinth tags it cartoon, cursed, vanilla-like, atmosphere and colored-lighting.
