Stracciatella Shaders is a lightweight, vanilla-style shader pack for Java that adds colored lighting without repainting the look of vanilla. It runs on Iris and OptiFine, comes from DrDesten, and is Java only, since Bedrock cannot run either loader.

Shader loaders and versions

  • Iris and OptiFine: Minecraft 1.8.9 to 1.21.11.

Effects and settings

Light-emitting blocks glow, tint and shade their surroundings through multi-lightsource colored lighting. The Overworld and the Nether get volumetric-like fog, including height-based fog and patches of dense fog that sweep the landscape. Smaller touches include rain refraction, puddles and shooting stars.

  • Fog has four modes: Off, Border, Auto and Advanced. Border is close to vanilla, while Advanced adds exponential distance and height fog plus sunset fog that thickens toward the sun.
  • Sky options cover custom stars (size, density, glow), shooting stars, sun and moon size and tilt, and RGB pickers for sky and fog colors.
  • Cave fog and cave sky change color underground.
  • The lightmap has a Default mode with every feature and a Simple mode with fewer. A minimum light setting keeps caves from going pitch black.

Distant Horizons and performance

The Auto fog mode switches to Advanced fog when Distant Horizons is present, and the fog effects look especially beautiful alongside it. The pack is described as very lightweight, but no hardware tiers are given, so your frame rate depends on which effects you enable.

Installation

  1. 1.Install Iris (on Fabric or NeoForge) or OptiFine.
  2. 2.Place the pack's .zip file in the shaderpacks folder.
  3. 3.Open Video Settings, choose Shader Packs and select Stracciatella.

The shader install guide covers the loader setup in more detail.

Questions about Stracciatella Shaders.

4 questions

How do I install Stracciatella Shaders?

Install Iris or OptiFine for Java, then place the shader pack's .zip file in the shaderpacks folder. Start Java with the loader, open Video Settings, choose Shader Packs and select Stracciatella. Both Iris and OptiFine have files listed for the pack, so either loader works.

Does Stracciatella Shaders work with Distant Horizons?

Yes, the pack is designed with it in mind. Its Auto fog setting switches to the Advanced fog when Distant Horizons is present, and the volumetric-like fog looks especially good with it.

Can I use Stracciatella Shaders on Bedrock?

No. It is a Java shader pack that needs Iris or OptiFine, and both are Java mods that Bedrock cannot run. Bedrock uses a different shader format, so you would need a separate pack made for it.

Is Stracciatella Shaders lightweight?

It is described as very lightweight, and its colored lighting is built for good performance. No hardware figures or performance tiers are given, so actual frame rates depend on your PC and on settings such as the Advanced fog.
