These are the lightweight Minecraft modpacks from our Java listing that stay near vanilla, ordered by Modrinth downloads. Fabulously Optimized is the most downloaded, Adrenaline is the only one where Modrinth lists both client and server as optional, and Rapid Optimization is the only one with Forge and NeoForge builds. Every pack is Java Edition only, and our modpack listing holds the full set.
How we picked these lightweight modpacks
We chose from the 17 lightweight Java modpacks we list. We did not benchmark or play-test any of these packs. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Fabric packs that stay closest to vanilla
Remarkably Optimized
Remarkably Optimized
@ThatDeeJay · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick this if you want OptiFine-style basics without the clutter. Its creator says the aim is to offer just the essential OptiFine features, and lists shader support, zoom and connected textures, with no added content, so it should fit most worlds and servers. The newest Fabric build is a marked release. The limits are plain: it is Fabric only, it must be installed on the client, and it links no source repository, so you cannot read its code or licence file.
Adrenaline
Adrenaline
@SkywardMC · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick Adrenaline for performance mods and nothing else. Its page says it includes no quality-of-life mods and no redundant performance mods, and that it can be installed on a server as well as a client. Fabric is the live loader, with the newest build marked beta. The Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.4 in June 2024, so Quilt players are left on old releases. Its page also asks readers to check Sodium's driver compatibility notes before installing.
FPS Booster
FPS Booster
@Nakirium · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
This is a small collection of frame-rate mods for players who want little else. Its creator lists their own frame rates on two machines, a Ryzen 7 9700X desktop and a GTX 1650 Ti laptop, but those are one person's numbers and not a result we checked. The newest Fabric build is a 0.2.0 beta, and the pack links no source, wiki or issue tracker, so help beyond the Modrinth page is thin.
FPS Essentials
FPS Essentials
@MaxMasterCoder · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
The narrowest pack here, and easy to audit, because its page names the whole contents: Sodium, Lithium, Iris Shaders and Entity Culling. Choose it if you want exactly those four and shader support through Iris. The trade-off is reach. Its newest Fabric build is a release for 26.1.2, behind the 26.3 builds of several other picks, and it has only five builds in total.
Packs that add visual or quality-of-life changes
Fabulously Optimized
Fabulously Optimized
@robotkoer · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
The most downloaded pack on this page, published in February 2022. Its page says it adds no content mods, so it works on any world or server, and it carries OptiFine-style features plus familiar extras such as game controller support and a larger advancement view. Its source is on GitHub under a BSD-3-Clause licence file. The catch is the channel, since its newest Fabric build is 15.0.0-alpha.5.
Additive
Additive
@SkywardMC · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Additive is built from Adrenaline and adds OptiFine-style features on top. Its page lists built-in shader support, a zoom feature, dynamic lighting from held items, better grass and snow, OptiFine and free capes, and a world hosting feature for LAN worlds. Source is on GitHub under an MIT licence file. Two limits apply. The newest Fabric build is an alpha, and the Quilt builds stopped at 1.20.4 in June 2024.
Vanilla Perfected
Vanilla Perfected
@demonjoeTV · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
This is the least pure pick, and it says so. Its page lists updated HUD and UI elements, mob animations, Minecraft Dungeons inspired structures and quality-of-life changes, and credits Vanilla Tweaks for the resource pack it uses. Its creator describes it as built around their own taste. It must be installed on both client and server, the newest Fabric build is a beta, and no source repository is linked.
The only pack here with Forge and NeoForge builds
Rapid Optimization
Rapid Optimization
@SnowFox114 · Modpack
Checked Source and install notes
Choose this if you are not on Fabric. It is the only pick with NeoForge and Forge builds as well as Fabric. Its page claims average gains of roughly 150 to 250 percent in non-extreme environments. We did not check that figure. The same page warns that ImmediatelyFast can hurt performance on some devices and that Ixeris may cause fullscreen black screens. The newest Fabric and NeoForge builds are betas, and no source repository is linked.
What lightweight means and what it does not
Here, lightweight is the category each project lists on Modrinth, and near vanilla means its own page describes no new blocks, mobs or dimensions. We did not measure memory use, file size or frame rates, so the label tells you what the projects claim and nothing more. For the wider idea, see what vanilla Minecraft means.
How to install a modpack
A Modrinth modpack is imported through a launcher that reads Modrinth packs, such as the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher, which then fetches the mods and the loader. Our modpack install guide covers the steps.
How to choose between them
Start with the loader. Rapid Optimization is the only pack here with Forge or NeoForge builds, and the loader comparison explains the difference. Then decide how much you want added: FPS Essentials and Adrenaline add the least, Additive and Fabulously Optimized add OptiFine-style features, and Vanilla Perfected adds content. For everything we left out, see every modpack we list.
