Additive

Additive bundles Sodium, Iris and dozens of rendering and lighting mods into one Fabric pack so Fabric players get OptiFine-style features without OptiFine itself. It runs on the client only, with no supported server-side release from SkywardMC.

Additive bundles dozens of rendering, lighting and interface mods for Fabric into one modpack designed to replace OptiFine feature for feature. SkywardMC keeps it synced with a lighter sibling called Adrenaline, and Additive runs on the client only, since no supported server-side build is offered.

What Additive replaces

Rather than one closed mod, Additive leans on a stack of open, source-available alternatives. Every mod in the pack stays individually swappable if a reader wants to strip one out.

What's included

  • Rendering and shader support through Sodium and Iris Shaders, plus better grass and snow
  • OptiFine and custom capes support
  • Dynamic lighting from held items and an integrated zoom feature
  • Small input fixes for macOS and Linux players, plus a free LAN world hosting feature
  • Borderless windowed play as a video option

Installing Additive

Because this ships through Modrinth, the usual route is a launcher that reads Modrinth packs, covered in how to install a modpack; Fabric itself needs setting up first, which this guide walks through. SkywardMC also offers its own standalone setup tool directly from its site.

The newest release folds its dependencies in directly and needs nothing extra, but a few older releases for 1.16.5, 1.17.1 and 1.18.2 each pull in a long separate list of rendering, texture and lighting mods instead. Its Quilt track has gone quiet, leaving Fabric as the only actively updated route into the pack.

Questions about Additive.

4 questions

Can Additive host a shared multiplayer world?

Additive includes a simple feature for opening a LAN world so friends on the same network can join. The pack itself only ships mods for the client, though, and SkywardMC doesn't publish a supported build for running a dedicated server.

Can I add extra mods to Additive?

Yes, SkywardMC designs Additive to accept extra mods after setup as long as they match the loader release being played. The pack itself stays intentionally narrow, focused on rendering, lighting and small quality-of-life fixes rather than trying to cover everything.

Why did Additive drop Quilt support?

Its Quilt releases stopped a while back while Fabric kept getting new updates, so Quilt is no longer an actively maintained route into Additive. Anyone still running Quilt is stuck on an older release; Fabric is the loader to use for anything current.

Is Additive open source?

Yes, the repository behind Additive is published under an MIT licence. The individual mods it bundles are open-source or source-available under their own authors' terms, which vary mod to mod.
