The loader and the game version narrow this shortlist more than the magic does. Goety is the most downloaded of the nine, Botania is the one built around natural magic and automation, and everything else we list for Java sits in Minecraft Java mods.
How we picked these magic mods
We chose from the 24 Java mods in our magic category, read on 5 October 2026. Apotheosis and Thaumcraft carry no Modrinth count and cannot be ranked, so they are not here. From the rest we kept the nine whose pages centre on spells, rituals, summoning or magical automation, and left out the other pages in the category. Those nine are sorted by Modrinth downloads. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Spell casting mods
Spell Engine
Spell Engine
@ZsoltMolnarrr · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Spell Engine is a data-driven library: spells are defined in JSON and the mod supplies the spell books, casting effects and weapon integration. Pick it if you want the casting system that other content mods plug into, or if you play on Fabric or NeoForge at a recent version. The trade-off is that it is mostly a platform. Required companions include Cloth Config, Player Animator and Spell Power Attributes, plus Fabric API and Trinkets on Fabric or Curios API on NeoForge.
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks
@iron431 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is a self-contained classic RPG caster. Its page lists over 100 upgradable spells, 12 wizard armor sets, 11 generated structures and two spellcasting bosses. The newest builds require no other mod. The limits are real: there is no Fabric build, NeoForge stops at 1.21.1, Forge at 1.20.1, and its page says no port to other versions is planned. The licence is all rights reserved, with use in modpacks allowed.
Wizards (RPG Series)
Wizards (RPG Series)
@ZsoltMolnarrr · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Wizards is a content mod for Spell Engine that adds arcane, fire and frost spell books, craftable robes, wands and staves, and Wizard Towers in villages. Choose it if you want ready-made classes on Fabric or NeoForge at 26.3. Spell Engine is required on every loader, and its page strongly suggests Better Combat. Forge support is 1.20.1 only. The licence is all rights reserved.
Ritual and dark magic mods
Goety - The Dark Arts
Goety - The Dark Arts
@Polarice3 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Goety centres on necromancy: you fill a totem with soul energy by killing mobs, then spend it on spells cast with wands and staves, summoned servants and artifices. It suits players who want an illager-flavoured dark path with its own mobs and structures. The trade-off is loader reach. Builds exist for NeoForge and Forge, none for Fabric, and the newest builds require Patchouli and Curios API. It is MIT licensed.
Blood Magic
Blood Magic
@WayofTime · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Blood Magic builds its power on a forbidden material, blood, and its page warns that every action can prove deadly. It ships with an in-game guidebook, the Sanguine Scientum. Pick it for the old-school sacrificial route on Forge 1.20.1. That is also the limit: Forge is the only loader listed, nothing newer than 1.20.1 is available, and the newest build requires Patchouli. Its page says work on a port to 1.21 and later is under way. It is licensed CC-BY-4.0.
Occultism
Occultism
@klikli-dev · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Occultism is a ritual system built on summoned spirits that can automate tasks, store items and mine for you. It is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. It is the strongest ritual pick for recent versions, since its NeoForge builds reach 26.3. The cost is a dependency list: the newest build requires Modonomicon, Geckolib and Curios API. Its code is MIT, but its page notes some assets sit under other licences.
Natural magic and magical automation
Botania
Botania
@Vazkii · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Botania is a tech mod themed around natural magic: you grow magical flowers and run devices on mana. Its page lists no pipes, no GUIs and no numbers as design rules, and says everything is meant to be renewable. It is the only pick here with Fabric, Forge and Quilt builds, but all stop at 1.20.1. It requires Patchouli, plus Curios API on Forge or Trinkets on Fabric and Quilt.
Ars Nouveau
Ars Nouveau
@baileyholl · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Ars Nouveau lets you craft your own spells, perform rituals and automate a base with magical servants, with its documentation delivered in-game through Patchouli. Choose it for custom spell building on NeoForge. Forge builds stopped, with the last one dated 23 June 2025, so Forge players are on an old line. Its code is LGPL v3, while textures and models are all rights reserved.
Mystical Agriculture
Mystical Agriculture
@BlakeBr0 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Mystical Agriculture is the loosest fit in this list. It carries the magic category on Modrinth, but its page describes growing resource crops, essences, tools and armor, and a spawner fed by mob essences. Pick it if you want a magical farming loop on top of another mod's progression. It requires Cucumber Library, and Forge stops at 1.20.1. It is MIT licensed.
How to choose between them
Start with the loader and version you already play on. Fabric at 26.3 points to Spell Engine and Wizards, NeoForge at 26.3 adds Occultism, and Forge 1.20.1 opens up every pick except Ars Nouveau's current line. Then choose the style: casting classes, summoning and sacrifice, or mana-driven automation. Check the Fabric, Forge and NeoForge comparison before committing to a loader.
Setup is covered in how to install mods on Java Edition and how to install Forge and NeoForge. Every pick here is marked client and server required on Modrinth.
