For minecraft storage mods on Java, the choice depends on world size. Iron Chests and Easy Shulker Boxes are small additions, Storage Drawers and the Sophisticated pair suit a growing base, Tom's Simple Storage Mod keeps a big base vanilla in style, and Refined Storage or Applied Energistics 2 suit the largest worlds. This page covers nine of the pages in our storage and inventory listing, with the loaders, licences and dependencies each one lists.

How we picked these storage mods

We chose from 33 Java storage pages in our catalogue. We kept the nine that add chests, backpacks, drawers or item networks, and left out sorting, tooltip, grave and tech mods that touch storage only in passing. Within each group the picks follow Modrinth downloads read on 9 October 2026. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Storage mods for a small solo world

Iron Chests

Iron Chests

@progwml6 · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Iron Chests adds chests for the vanilla metals in varying sizes, and that is the whole idea. It suits a solo world where you want bigger containers without learning a new system. The limit is the loader list. There is no Fabric release, Forge releases stopped in December 2023, and the NeoForge releases reach 1.21.11 with the last one dated 1 January 2026. Players on a 26.x world will not find a match. The shulker boxes it once had now live in a separate mod, Iron Shulker Boxes.

Easy Shulker Boxes

Easy Shulker Boxes

@Fuzs · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForgev 1.19 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Easy Shulker Boxes lets you insert, remove and browse shulker box contents straight from your inventory, and it also covers ender chests. Data packs can extend it to storage items from other mods. It suits a small world where shulker boxes are already your main way to carry things. The trade-off is that it is not client-only: its page says it must be on both client and server, and it requires Puzzles Lib on Fabric and NeoForge, plus Fabric API and Forge Config API Port on Fabric. Forge releases stopped at 1.20.4 in April 2024.

Traveler's Backpack

Traveler's Backpack

@Tiviacz1337 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 1.21.5

Checked Source and install notes

Traveler's Backpack is the most downloaded pick here, and it suits a solo or small-group world that wants carried storage. It has five tiers from Leather to Netherite, 11 functionality upgrades, over 45 custom backpacks, and a backpack can also be placed as a block so hoppers or pipes reach it. Its newest Fabric release requires Fabric API and Forge Config API Port, while older Fabric releases differ. The repository has no licence file we could find, so the Modrinth label of LGPL-3.0-only is unconfirmed.

Storage mods for a growing base

Sophisticated Backpacks

Sophisticated Backpacks

@P3pp3rF1y · Java Mod

JavaNeoForge, Forgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Sophisticated Backpacks has six tiers, two-colour dyeing, and upgrades such as pickup, magnet, filter and void. Placed in the world, a backpack accepts items from hoppers and pipes. It suits a base where you want portable storage that also behaves like a container. It has no Fabric release, only NeoForge and Forge, and it requires Sophisticated Core, a library we have no page for. The licence file is All Rights Reserved, with translations free to reuse.

Sophisticated Storage

Sophisticated Storage

@P3pp3rF1y · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.18.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Sophisticated Storage adds tiered barrels, chests and shulker boxes in all vanilla wood variants, with upgrade slots and a Decoration Table for colours and materials. Its Limited Barrels hold one to four slots with larger stack limits, which suits bulk storage of a few item types. Like the backpacks from the same creator, it covers NeoForge and Forge only, requires Sophisticated Core, and carries an All Rights Reserved licence file. Tom's Simple Storage Mod lists it as an optional NeoForge pairing.

Storage Drawers

Storage Drawers

@Texelsaur · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Storage Drawers is the one pick here with current releases on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge alike, under an MIT licence file. It suits a base with many stacks of the same few items. The trade-off is the interface: there is no traditional slotted inventory, and you interact by clicking each drawer on the front. Right-click inserts a stack, left-click removes one item, and Shift with left-click removes a full stack. Fabric also needs Fabric API.

Storage mods for a large survival world or server

Tom's Simple Storage Mod

Tom's Simple Storage Mod

@tom5454 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.15.2 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Tom's Simple Storage Mod describes itself as a simple, vanilla-style storage mod. Its feature list includes a storage and crafting terminal, an inventory connector, an open crate, a wireless terminal, filtered connectors and an inventory hopper. It must be installed on both client and server. Forge and Quilt releases have both stopped, and on Fabric its page says Indium is required if Sodium is installed.

Item networks for very large worlds

Both networks store items digitally and craft automatically. Our Refined Storage vs AE2 page goes deeper into how they differ. Both need installing on client and server.

Applied Energistics 2

Applied Energistics 2

@shartte · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.18.2 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Applied Energistics 2 stores items as a digital network, adds pattern-based auto-crafting, a channel system that caps devices per cable, and spatial storage that holds a region of the world. Its own page says it is known for complexity and depth. It suits players who want a large automation project. The trade-off is release status: the newest NeoForge release is an alpha dated 3 October 2026 and requires GuideME, while Fabric and Forge releases end at 1.20.1.

Refined Storage

Refined Storage

@Refined Mods · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.20.1 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

Refined Storage stores items and fluids on an expandable device network, read through a single Grid interface. Importers, exporters, constructors, destructors and auto-crafting are part of the same system. It is MIT-licensed and has Fabric and NeoForge releases. The trade-offs are that its releases stop at 26.1.2, with the last update on 7 June 2026, and that Forge releases stopped at 1.20.1. A 26.3 world has no matching release yet.

How to choose between them

Start with your loader and Minecraft version, because that removes most of the list: the Sophisticated mods skip Fabric, Iron Chests has no 26.x release, and Refined Storage stops at 26.1.2. Then match the mod to the size of the job: containers for a small world, drawers or Sophisticated Storage for a growing base, Tom's terminal for a big vanilla-style one, and a network when you want auto-crafting. Check the licence if you plan to put the mod in a modpack. For installing, see how to install mods on Java, Forge and NeoForge or Fabric. Everything we left out is on the storage listing.
