Old School Minecraft is a modpack by Minix that pulls the game back toward its Alpha and Beta days while keeping the new features and items. It runs on Fabric and NeoForge, with older Forge files that are no longer updated. It must be installed on both the client and the server, so it suits solo worlds and multiplayer groups that agree on the same pack.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18 to 1.21.1. Some builds for 1.18 to 1.18.2 require Cloth Config API, Sodium, Hunger Remover, Starlight (Fabric), Fabric Language Kotlin, Indium, Fabric API, Colormatic, Custom Entity Models, Parry, Lithium, Nostalgic Tweaks, Mod Menu and Legacy Bows; some builds for 1.18 to 1.18.2 require Cloth Config API, Sodium, Hunger Remover, Starlight (Fabric), Fabric Language Kotlin, Indium, Fabric API, Colormatic, Custom Entity Models, Lithium, Nostalgic Tweaks, Mod Menu and Legacy Bows.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.19.4 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after March 2024.
What it changes
- Old menus and chests, restoring the early interface.
- Old world terrain.
- Old animations throughout.
- XP and hunger removed, which changes survival pacing.
- An in-game settings screen on the O key, with more options through the Mod button.
The result is a nostalgia pack rather than a content overhaul. The tags on Modrinth point to adventure, combat and magic play, but the main draw is the atmosphere.
How to make an old school world
This works on Fabric only.
- 1.Set the World Type to Modern Beta or Moderner Beta.
- 2.Press Customize.
- 3.Pick the terrain style, such as Beta, Indev, Alpha or even the Xbox 360 layout.
- 4.Enter a seed, for example the well-known Glacier and Gargamel seeds.
- 5.Create the world.
Installing the pack
Open the .mrpack file in the Modrinth App, or in Prism Launcher or another launcher that reads that format. It fetches the mods and the matching loader for you. The modpack install guide covers the steps if you have not done it before.
Texture packs worth adding
Minix suggests pairing the pack with Beta Continuum, Developer Art Classic, Simpler Times or Golden Days. Each restyles textures toward the older look, and none is bundled.
Questions about Old School Minecraft.
3 questions
How do I install the Old School Minecraft modpack?
Open the pack's .mrpack file in the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher or another launcher that reads Modrinth packs. The launcher downloads the listed mods and the right loader automatically. Pick Fabric if you want the custom old school world types, since those are Fabric only.
Does Old School Minecraft work on multiplayer?
Yes, it is listed with the multiplayer category. The pack is required on both the client and the server, so everyone who joins needs the same modpack installed, and the host must run it too.
Is Old School Minecraft available for Bedrock?
No. It is a Java modpack distributed through Modrinth, which hosts Java content. Bedrock uses a different add-on format, so this pack will not load there.
