Chat Patches is a chat mod for Fabric and Quilt that fixes the small annoyances in vanilla chat. It runs on the client only, so it changes how you see and store messages without touching the multiplayer servers you join. It replaces a handful of older single-purpose chat mods with one configurable package.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.2. The newest build requires YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) and Fabric API, optionally Mod Menu and No Chat Reports; some builds for 1.21.11 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies; some builds for 1.19.4 to 1.20.1 require YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL), Fabric API and Mod Menu; some builds for 1.19.1 to 1.19.4 require Fabric API; some builds for 1.18 to 1.19.3 require Fabric API; some builds for 1.19.1 to 1.19.2 require Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.18 to 1.21.7. The newest build requires YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) and Fabric API, optionally Mod Menu and No Chat Reports; some builds for 1.19.4 to 1.20.1 require YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL), Fabric API and Mod Menu; some builds for 1.19.1 to 1.19.4 require Fabric API; some builds for 1.18 to 1.19.3 require Fabric API; some builds for 1.19.1 to 1.19.2 require Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu.
What it changes in chat
- Raises the chat limit from 100 messages to 16,384.
- Adds a pink [HOUR:MINUTE:SECOND] timestamp to every message, with a full-date tooltip.
- Keeps chat history and sent messages across all worlds and servers, with optional logging for later sessions.
- Shows a counter for duplicate messages sent in a row.
- Lets you rename vanilla player names, for example to drop the angle brackets.
- Adds a search bar and a menu for copying data from a message.
- Shifts the chat hud up 10 pixels, clear of the armor bar.
Chat Patches folds in ideas from More Chat History, When Was That Again, Don't Clear Chat History, No Angled Brackets, Clear Spam, Chat Up! and Compact Chat.
Installing and configuring it
- 1.Install Fabric or Quilt for your release, following the Fabric loader guide if you are new to it.
- 2.Put the Chat Patches file and its required libraries in your mods folder.
- 3.Launch with the loader profile.
- 4.On newer releases, add Mod Menu or Catalogue with Menulogue to open settings in-game.
The config also lives at config/chatpatches.json. When an update resets your settings, the old values are saved to chatpatches_old.json.
Questions about Chat Patches.
4 questions
Does Chat Patches work on multiplayer servers?
Yes, as a client-side mod it works when you join servers, and nothing needs installing on the server itself. If it is placed on a server it does nothing. Its extra history, timestamps and search apply only to what your own screen receives.
How do I open the Chat Patches settings?
For 1.19.2 and later, install Mod Menu, or Catalogue with Menulogue, and open the config from the mod list. On every release you can edit config/chatpatches.json directly. If you still cannot reach the settings, open an issue on GitHub and include any logged errors.
Can I use Chat Patches on Forge or NeoForge?
Not yet. The creator says Forge and NeoForge support is planned but depends on a complicated in-development system, with no date given. Today it targets Fabric, and Quilt is reported to work.
Why did my Chat Patches settings reset?
Recent updates create a fresh config and reset the main file. Your previous values are kept in chatpatches_old.json in the config folder. Open both files, paste the values over, and make sure toggles use true or false rather than numbers or quoted text.
