Colorful Trims turns every dye into an armor trim material. This colorful trims datapack also ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It must be active on the host side, in singleplayer or on a multiplayer host. On the client, the resource pack is required to see the custom trims.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.20 to 1.20.6 require Fabric API.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21.2 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

Put any dye in the smithing table together with armor and a trim template, exactly as you would with a vanilla trim material. It works with all trims and all armor. Bluebird also makes Emissive Trims, a separate pack that makes the trims glow.

Installing the mod or the datapack

  1. 1.Mod route: place the file for your loader in the mods folder. The Java mod install guide covers the steps.
  2. 2.Datapack route: install the datapack in the world and enable it, then restart the host so the smithing table recipes load.
  3. 3.If you use the datapack, equip the resource pack on every player's machine. Without it, trims show as the missing texture.

Fixing common problems

  • Red X over the smithing table recipe: drop the dye on the ground, pick it up and try again. If that fails, restart the host.
  • Dye recipes do nothing: restart the world, host or realm after enabling the datapack.
  • Dye will not go into the smithing table: check that the datapack is installed and enabled correctly.
  • On 1.21.5 and later, you may need to drop an item on the ground before it accepts a trim.

The trade-off is the extra step. Textures depend on the resource pack, and the datapack route needs a restart before it works.

Questions about Colorful Trims.

3 questions

How do I install the Colorful Trims datapack?

Install the datapack in your world and enable it, then restart the world or host so the smithing table recipes load. Then equip the separate resource pack so the trim colors render. The resource pack file is found under the datapack file on the Versions tab of the Modrinth page.

Why do my trims show a missing texture?

The resource pack is not equipped. The custom trims only display with the resource pack, and without it you see the missing texture. Download it from the Versions tab of the Modrinth page, enable it on your client, and the colored trims should display on your armor.

Does Colorful Trims work on multiplayer?

Yes. The datapack or mod must be active on the host side, and the host needs a restart after setup so the smithing table recipes work. On the client, the resource pack is required to see the trim textures.
